I've just recently "discovered" Vern Gosdin. Mercy, what a monster artist! Does anyone know who played steel for him, and particularly on "Chiseled in Stone"? Thanks in advance.

I believe Big Jim Vest played on most all of Vern's hits. I'm not sure if anyone else played on some or not. Vern used to have a steel player that worked the road with him, also. His name was Wayne Bridges. I don't know if he's still with him or not.

I believe Sonny Garrish played on "Chiseled in Stone" and Jim played on "Set em Up Joe"

Bob and Larry are both right. Although Sonny Garrish is a super top-notch wonderful steeler and did a fine job on Vern's stuff, personally I feel that somehow Jim Vest really "fits" with Vern's vocal style. Notice that even when Vest is laying back out, he's still there with a note or a chord way back in the mix, just barely enough so you know it. I realize that probably that's the way Vern Gosdin wanted it mixed, but anyway it sounds good. And by the way, if you are ever in the studio with Jim Vest you will find that he will do whatever it takes to get the appropriate lick to fit the tune (even if it takes him 20 takes to do it!) Some might think "he's not paying for the time anyway" but it's not about that. He just wants it to sound right to properly fit the song AND the singer.

I've always liked Big Jims playing. I listen to the Paycheck stuff then "set em up Joe" theres no doubt that is all Jim. Does he still put the cognac glass on the c6 neck and play e9 around it without spilling?

Jim Vest is a true stylist. He lowered the tenth string(E9th) to F# on "Set Em Up Joe" and "Slide Off Your Satin Sheets" by Johnny Paycheck.

With the state of country radio it's possible, albeit difficult to have only recently discovered "The Voice", Vern Gosdin.

Check out his "Ten Years of Hits"; tons of Vern's hits and Jim's steel. Somewhere around here I have Chisled ... on tape, but who plays tapes anymore?
