A few weeks ago, I heard a writer from Nashville named Austin Cunningham perform this song (as yet unrecorded). It's definitely "country". The title is "George Jones and Jesus", and this is the chorus:

George Jones and Jesus are heroes of mine
One is only human, the other one divine
When I could not find a friend
O found out that I had two
George Jones and jesus pulled me through

Right now, Austin is playing guitar for a new group called The Bakers. They're a mother/daughter (the daughter is 19, and the mom's probably in her early 40's). They're similar to The Wilkinsons, but more country than that. Watch out for them soon. Should have a single and album out later in the year.

I heard a version of this (killer) song on a demo by a guy named Lance Miller. I was under the impression that Lance had written it. He sure sang the hell out of it at any rate! Mighty fine singer/songwriter and he'll be performing at Fred's Dance Hall in Carbondale, Illinois this Saturday, August 18. If you're a fan of pure country music and are in the area, check him out for sure.

I've got Austin Cunningham performing it on videotape, so I'll have to watch it again and see what he says. He may very well have mentioned a co-writer. Then again, he may have simply neglected to mention the co-writer. I've seen songwriters do that before -- one time they'll mention the co-writer, other times just say they co-wrote it, and other times just say that they wrote it.

You're right, though, it's a killer song.

This was indeed co-written by Austin and Lance. Hats off to both these guys for a mighty fine country tune, and here's hoping this one makes it to the masses.

Great country songs! Country as a fishin' worm.
