This news is sad indeed for me as well as other steelers who play with the artists that charted and achieved some credibility. This was a email sent to Bruce Kidder of KHYI radio here in the D/FW area (which was a Gavin Americana reporting station):
It is with much sadness that I share this e-mail that hit my mailbox today: To Gavin Americana Reporters: It is with regret that Gavin must announce that the Americana charts will cease with this issue, October 13, 2000. It has been a gratifying five years of watching the format grow, but as yet, it has not made inroads significant enough to allow it to continue as part of Gavin in the present business climate. We appreciate all of you at radio who have diligently reported to us. We know how much dedication it takes, especially in light of how many hats each of you wears in your respective situations. Take heart in the reality that Americana will not go away. Our artists will continue to make great music and impact the landscape, just as you will continue to bring it to your audience. You are fighting the good fight, and I know that it is appreciated by the artists, your listeners, and all the people doing the business of Americana. I will be moving on. I will share details with you as soon as I can. In the meantime, Gavin has graciously allowed me to keep my contact info (phone and email) until the Americana Music Association Annual Meeting and Conference takes place November 10 and 11. Gavin CEO David Dalton comments: "I hold Americana dear to my heart and I'm sorry that Gavin will not be able take part in the format's future success as we redirect our energies into other areas. Jessie, in particular, has done a terrific job and I hope that the AMA will be able to build on the foundation that we have helped lay in the past five years." For those who are not up to speed...Gavin Magazine was the one radio trade publication that gave creedence to the artists that we call "Americana". This chart has, over the last five years, had #1 records from Robert Earl, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Allison Moore, and many others. Some of your local favorites Max Stalling, Mark David Manders, and Kevin Deal have all had Top 10 records in the past year. Tommy Alverson and Larry Joe Taylor are climbing the charts, and Houston Marchman was gearing up for his first run at Americana. What does it all mean? | Americana format stations are not going to quit playing Americana music just because Gavin is not covering that genre of music. My band debut at # 37 on Fri Oct 13, the last week of the Gavin coverage. Heck yeah I was bummed but not devistated. The whole Americana sceen is getting bigger every day, but not so big yet that it is too full of contrived crap like popular nashville music. Now if Tim McGraw would just take one of our good songs and make a terrible version of it I would be set!! |

Maybe someone will explain something to me. What is this "Americana Chart" anyway? Isn't it just another "hit list" that's based on sales, or airplay statistics? Why does it cost so much to do? Why can't someone else just "pick up the ball and run with it"? They (Gavin) make it sound like it was a really big enterprise and a real drain on their corperation.
Why is it I find that hard to believe?  |

Steve's group is 1100 Springs.
I checked out a couple sound clips at
1100springs.com and i was somewhat impressed.
Their version of San Antonio Rose realy cooks.
