Just took delivery of a really nice 1917 Gibson A-4 for any of you connoiseurs out there. This one has one of the nicest dark cherry sunburst finishes that I've seen and no cracks (some checking, but no cracks). Nice full, round tone and I got it for cheap, too!

Hey Steve; Congrats pal. I know how nice a instrument that is cause my younger Brother has one just like it. To me that is the best sounding one I have ever heard. So how much did you spend pal>you can tell us; we are all Brothers here.

So Steve, play any Bush or Grisman stuff yet on your new mandolin? I just taught my self Opus 57, on steel of course. Sounds easy on the mandolin…HAR HAR HAR. I own an old Fender electric mandolin. Serial # is 00401. This gem reeks like a Chesterfield and has a burn on the peg head underneath a string where some good old boy placed his cig while he was probably picking the tar out of this thing.

Well Gary, actually I'm more of an Andy Statman and Dave Appollon man myself.....little humor there - I'd kill to be able to play 1/10th as good as Sam Bush or Dave Grisman. And Martin, you are correct - I live in West BumF*** Nevada, not much to do except play music and work long hours. So, YUP! I am enjoying my toys. Which is a good lead-in to Ricky's question: I paid (sheepishly, he says...) $bleep! for it. That's actually dern cheap. I could probably wholesale it out to a dealer for that. Anyway, it's fun. Thanks for the interest.

| Yessiree Jon - That's cheap for an F-2, no doubt because the repairs were extensive and it has kind of detracted from original condition. My fave is an F-4 - I'll have one one day, but for now, the A-4 is nice. I'll post a pic as soon as I get hold of some FTP software. Cya. |

Hey Gary Lee,My Dad has a four string electric fender mandolin.
It looks just like a baby Fender guitar.
He bought it back in the middle fifty's.
It is supose to be handed down to me.
I can play it some ,but it will just mostly be a keep sake peice.
That makes me wonder what will my children do with all my other toys.
Yeah somebody is going to get lucky,for my children have no intrest at all in playing music.
I can see it now ,Hey Joe let me borrow your truck,I have found a Gold mine of musical instruments.
I ,just need to hurry up and swing the deal,and get them loaded and moved.

That 1916 F-2 at that Web site looks very much like an F-2 I bought from Roland White's dad in 1965 or so. It was black, but I had it re-finished. Mine was a 1915, I believe. I bought it for $200, IIRC. I ended up selling it to a woman who played in the Los Angeles mandolin orchestra.
The f-hole mandolins sound a lot better for bluegrass, in my opinion; they have that "woody" sound. I now own a Kasuga F-5 copy that my brother got for me in 1976 in Tokyo.
