Does anyone know who did the vocal on this song when it was first released? I was asked the question by a friend but all I can remember is hearing it years ago-- not who did the vocal.
Thanks,
John |

I think "The Man In Black" Mr. Cash had a version of that song in the late 50's or early 60's. He also had a version of a song called "Long Black Vail" about the same time. Both songs were very much alike in nature of content and style.
(Because a few brain-cells have died since then, I could be wrong about this.) |

Wynn Stewart had a great recording of it; I think it was written by Vern Stovall, haven't seen a recorded version by him.Elvis did it, too! |

Vern Stovall did have a version issued, and I bet someone on the Forum has that sitting at home. He recorded for Crest, Brookshurst and I think Toppa before signing with Dewey Groom's Longhorn label in the mid 1960's.
Wynn Stewart and Haggard cut very fine versions and you are most likely to get a copy of their versions rather than Vern's as it's probably as rare as hen's teeth now.

Lefty Frizzell sang the first version I heard of the "Long Black Veil." I don't think Left had aversion of the Long Black Limo but of course, I could be wrong.

as far as i know, the original version was by vern stovall on crest 1080, released in late 1961. i don't have it in front of me, but from memory it was written by stovall and bobby george.
others to do it in the 60s were glen campbell (on his first album), rose maddox, and jody miller, who had a chart hit with it in 1968.
wynn stewart recorded it in 1958, but it was not released until the 1980s when it showed up on wynn's LP on bear family.
didn't elvis do it too?
where is stovall these days? |

Mitch, Vern is in Texas, has been there for a looong time. Although I think he did a Nashville stint around the late 1960's.
Janet McBride is a possible contact for him, but I haven't been able to get any email through to her.
Janet and Vern cut a Longhorn lp together with Dewey GRoom's band in 1966 {or so}. |

I don't know who the vocalist was on that song, but I do know that Curly Chalker played that tune on his "More Ways To Play" Album, written by Stovall-George. I think it was one of Curly's best arranged and best performed tunes he ever recorded. If you want to be challenged as a player, try doing the tune like Curley. |
