I think TNN has established itself with a new rock bottom in it's amazing programming these days... a fine commentary on our current state of affairs:
Cruising thru the channels the other night, a quick hesitation at TNN found Barry Manilow crooning "country"?!?!?!.... a full hour special of "Manilow Country" was in progress. How could this possibly appeal to anyone in any-way-shape-or-form???... it's seriously beyond me. |

This drummer friend of mine opened up a small Halloween costume shop outside of Boston a few year ago. He had this highschool kid working for him with long hair, lots of zits and an old black tee shirt of some metal band. One night this guy comes in with a perm and a full length fur coat on. Manilow walks to the back of the store and the kid yells "Yo, Barry Manilow ! Your music sucks !" Manilow sunk into his coat and quickly left the store.
Gorrilla mask- $19
Teenager telling Manilow that he sucks in person- Priceless |

Hey! I was a lounge lizard (growing up in Vegas) and I don't care what ANYBODY thinks, I LIKE MANILOW! He's got a Christmas album that will knock your socks off, musically speaking.
I was surprised to see the Manilow Country thing. I watched "some" of it. At least the guy can sing as opposed to "RAP" music. (MUSIC???)

A quick trip around the radio dial will convince you that producers nowadays think ANYBODY can sing Country Music!
(If he'd a hadda' good steelman, I'd 'a listened to Tiny Tim!) |

I don't think he's country, and I don't really like his music, but I do think he's a very talented musician, songwriter and performer.
Of course, Roy Rosetta plays circles around him. |

Bobby, I have to agree with you. I personally do not care for his music either, but I believe I can see past my personal tastes, and recognize talent when I see it, regardless of genre. The same goes for "new" country, trad country, foreign country, new rock, oldie rock, world music, salsa, metal, classical, Chinese opera, Javanese gamalan and yes -- even rap. I can recognize originality and talented execution, even if I personally dislike the genre, and my CD collection reflects that.
One caveat on rap however, is that I can find absolutely NO redeeming qualities in lyrics that promote violence towards women (or anyone, for that matter), and glorify drug use and gratuitous sex. There's enough negativity in the world as it is. We don't need to throw gasoline on the fire. My 2 cents, FWIW.
OK... please give me a minute to put on my fire retardant suit.
