Hey Gregg,
I just scored a copy of the Gene Watson CD on Step One called "A Way to Survive". There's a cut on there called "All Hat No Cattle". I was impressed with your guitar solo and wanted a little information on what you used for it. It sounds like a Strat to me. Was it direct and with what effects if any etc. I thought it was kind of unusual sound for a western swing tune and really cooked! If any of you Forumites haven't heard this CD you'd better get one soon. It features B. Emmons and Weldon Myrick on steel plus Gregg on lead guitar, Rob Hajocos on fiddle, and David Smith on Bass. That just about makes any song in the world sound good with that bunch. Also check out the title tune "A Way to Survive". I thought I'd heard this song every way in the world and was sick of it by now, but this is a wonderful slower version and Buddy does a different solo than the Price version and sends chills up and down your spine with his beautiful tone and technique.

Jerry,
3 years is a long time in "old dog" time, but I'm pretty sure that I was playing my 1977 Strat, w/EMG pick-ups.Shortly after the CD was released, I was working a session with David Smith, and commented to him that I thought that my solo on "All Hat" sounded rather "structured". David replied, "That's probably because you 'planned' the solo and played a harmony track along with it. Somehow, Kevin McManus forgot to 'punch up' the harmony track when he mixed the tune."
At any rate, I was probably playing through an MXR Dyna-comp, Furman PQ3 EQ unit, and an Alesis Quadra-verb (for delay and reverb.)
I really appreciate your interest. Those sessions with Gene were very inspiring! He's one of the few singers of whom it can truly be said that he's "singing better than ever!"
BTW, Some of the best fiddle work on that particular CD was played by Aubrey Haynie--especially on the "title cut."

Gregg...I won't ask you to remember what gear you used on the "Broadway" solo, from the Swing Shift Band's "Swinging By Request" CD.
But for sure, the lead guitar solo has great tone, feel, and an interesting melody, as well as enough punch to "sonically level anything in its path".
I don't fight the urge to crank the stereo up on that one, and also give "Moseying" a spirited treatment.
The latter tune is to me a definitive synopsis of a contemporary Western Swing tune, arraingement, band, performance, and sound.

Hey Gregg,
Thanks for the reply and info! Do you have any current projects which feature your guitar work which we might enjoy. I'd like to see a solo guitar CD by you someday, is there a possibility of that? Keep up the good work as a whole bunch of us out here in music land really enjoy your playing!

Jerry,
Thanks for your interest and nice comments. While I haven't done any major label projects in a while, one of the more "fun" albums I've played on lately was a thing I co-produced over this past winter with fellow Forumite, Fred Ermentrout. Fred's a singer,song-writer, and guitar player from near St. Louis, who plays in the area with his band, The Rangers. I've had the pleasure of working on 3 CDs with Fred and his group.
The most recent project also features Doyle Grisham on steel. I know Doyle has a lot of fans out there who would enjoy his work on this CD.
I'm only venturing a guess, but I think Fred would probably part with a copy or 2 if one were to E-mail him at Lefty480@aol.com .
Rich,
Thanks for the kind words. I suppose I need to re-listen to that Swing Shift CD again.
