Thought I'd record an 'album'at home of my favourite jazz and swing tunes, but no point doing the tunes already recorded by Buddy E, Doug Jernigan, Mike Ihde and others...I'm programming the drums, and I reckon they sound pretty 'real', and playing everything else myself, leaving room for a real live jazz piano-player to be added later. Trouble is, it's pretty laborious laying tracks one at a time and my steel playing's not good enough yet. Then I went and listened to Bob Taillefer's CD, and the No Peddlers albums by Tom Morrell and his chums (especially the album with Clint Strong on guitar!).
I give up!

Dont give up !! I have considered doing the same thing as you, but have not yet purchased a digital recorder. What do you have and recommend and what do you use for the drums. I am strongly considering the new Boss dr8, i think it is called. It uses zip files and is supposedly pretty straight forward to use. Back to the point, yes there are lots of really good steel albums out there of swing stuff, etc. but there arent any by you ! Even if it is laborious, and I know that it is, once you are done you will have something that will be around forever, and will be fun to do I am sure. Good luck, and hang in there.  Just my two cents worth. I have often thought it would be fun if different players on the forum made tapes of their playing, not professionally done, but somewhat good quality, and swapped them. I know I would enjoy hearing others play. I think this idea was brought up once before, but I never heard of the outcome, if there was one. |

| Tony. Band in a box is a good place to start. So it isn't you playing the all the instruments. Who cares. It makes for exciting background. If you're into converting it to a midi program you can change or convert tracks to anything you choose. It makes it fun again without the problems you mention. |

I don't think you can replace the human sensitivity of a live drummer when it comes to swing, or anything else for that matter. I've worked both ways and a matched pair of bass and drums working with you is the ultimate. You can put your recording together with a "George in the Box" but use live people to really cut it.
You know how we feel about folks substituting steel. I've been recorded live with a "George" but I wouldn't get serious without real people.

Bill Stafford has some good stuff on his Cd "Going Home" and he just plays steel on it, no band or anything, It is complicated chordwise,
so it would be hard to get good backup for it, apparently. Sounds good. I think I will try to record some songs without a backup band, It is hard to get a band around here to play that non-country stuff and Bill's is sure non-country......al[This message was edited by Al Marcus on 17 June 2000 at 09:29 PM.] |

Thanks for your encouragement guys - I was having a bad day.I even posted my message in the wrong category -it was meant for the No Peddlers section. In answer to your questions - I have a Tascam DA38 (digital tape). The quality is excellent. I've already recorded an acoustic/vocal album on it that's out on CD. But for all you computer people out there, it is a tape machine - no cut-and-paste editing here!
My drum module is an Alesis D4. The sounds are great. I've made up a 'real' kit which is as good or better than I could get by miking a real kit. It's just a sound module though, no patterns or sequencer facility. I don't have a computer (Just an old Roland hardware sequencer), so those other suggestions like Band-in-a-Box are out. The Tom Morrel album featuring Clint Strong on guitar is called "Pterodactyl Ptales" and it's knockout! Thanks again for your help - looks like it's all down to me, there are no Western Swing musicians in this part of England! |
