Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw's scrape with the law didn't seem to affect their preformance. This show was really fantastic and worth every cent. Believe it or not, There was plenty of classic country to be heard. George is doing a real swingin' rendition of the Webb Pierce classic "There Stands The Glass". Along with all his own material.
Mark Chestnut tore it up! Thank goodness he saved the Aerosmith song for last. This gave me some time to make it out to "Strait Land" and hear newcomer Clay Davidson. Here's a guy that really should have been inside on the main stage. Catch him in the clubs while you still can.
Martina was Martina. Take that anyway you like. Strong voice. Great Band. Her new material STINKS!!!! It sounds like 3rd rate Cheryel Crow.(SP)
Asleep At The Wheel was awesome as always. And, didn't get nearly enough stage time for my buck.
Leann Womack. I love her voice. I didn't hear "Buckaroo" but I may have been taking donations at that time to buy a $4.00 hotdog and a $2.50 soda.
Kenny Chesney. Don't like him. No comment. Well, I guess that was a comment. Whatever.
Tim McGraw. Real crowed pleaser. What he does, he does very well. I just don't really care for most of what he does. If Tim and Kenny had gotten away with the horse and had still been on the lam at show time, it wouldn't have broke my heart if they called in Bill Kirchen and Brad Paisley to fill their shoes. They're from the area.
George proved that his name deserved top billing. None of the other preformers would argue that point I'm sure. Every song was a classic including his own. He sang Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Webb Pierce, George Jones, and George Strait. Than, being the loyal Texan that he is, pulled open his shirt a' la Clark Kent to reveal a Dallas Cowbows T-Shirt. Remember that this was at Washington Redskins stadium! I don't like either team. But I did admire that stunt I must admit.
Steel guitars represented were: Zum-Steel, Emmons, Marrs, and Slim played an excel. I gotta' tell ya' I didn't hear much varaiation in sound. They all sounded great.
Again. Great show for the most part. Worth the money. I had to pay $20.00 to park! That pi$$ed me off a little. I'll be alrght. [This message was edited by pix1 on 05 June 2000 at 04:06 PM.] |

Nicely balanced report. It sounds like we think very much alike on our country music.
Well, since it’s the great George Strait, I’ll make an exception and continue buying his CD’s. (See OTB: The REAL News in Washington, D.C.)
Truthfully, who could be surprised that Geo is a Cowboys fan? Nobody’s perfect.

Hey Danny,
I forget the guy's name. He plays with Clay Davidson. He had the standard E9th tuning on the front neck and a open tuning, I think it D on the back neck. 2 pedals were set aside for the rear neck. A helluva' a player I can tell ya' that.

Pix1 quoted "all 4 steels not much variation in sound, they all sounded great."Got it guys?
It must be in the Players hands.
So in that case, why not just get the easiest one there is to haul around ,(lightweight) and the lowest priced one, with the best action ..al

Yes, Al the hands--the hands of the sound guy on the mixing board. Too often those hands are turning the steel down and/or running the highs into the stratosphere. Too many shows sound about like a thunderstorm. |

When I say that they all sounded the same, I mean that they all sounded great. When it came time for a solo, The Excel sounded just as good as the Zum-Steel or The Emmons. The show did not sound like a "thunderstorm" at all. Although, a lot of them these days tend to. This one was the exception. I hope it comes around again. |
