and last but not least one of my favorites of all time "The Desert Rose Band" featuring John Jorgensen on Guitar, Jay Dee Maness on Pedal Steel, Chris Hillman on guitar & lead vocals, Herb Pedersen on guitar/banjo & vocals, sorry I can't remember the bass player & drummers names but this has to be one of the finest examples of West Coast country ever assembled. They had their s%$t all in one sock for sure and I miss hearing that great stuff on the radio!

What Jerry said--The Desert Rose Band. Twas Bill Bryson on bass and Steve Duncan on drums, I believe. Man they were tighter than...ummm...tight. Yeah, that's it! An excellent live band, too. Can't forget the Tennessee Two...Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant. Maybe not technically great musicians, but they made Johnny Cash what he was/is. |

Keepin' it country with Melbourne group the Starliners...and yes the Desert Rose Band are awesome!
Boomer you mentioned Gene Davis & the Star Routers, I haven't heard any of their stuff together,I don't know whether Gene ever recorded with them. Some of you SoCal boys got to see them on the box or live, hell Jay Dee Maness was a Star Router for a time!
I got one of Gene's Lp's circa the late 1970's and it is great!
Got some Red Rhodes & the Detours and Johnny Meeks and the Detours {just Johhny fronting Red's band really},all very tasty.
any group with Clarence White, preference for the Kentucky Colonels, Nashville West and Muleskinner. |

My Top Five Current Bands:
- Los Lobos
- New Riders of the Purple Sage
- Jim Camplilongo & the Ten Gallon Cats
- Tom Morrell and the Time Warp Top Hands
- The Fly-Rite Boys
I didn't include bands that no longer perform. That would be a different Top Five list.

Former favorite...The Troubadors 1958-78.
Favorite "pro band" now performing??? I haven't a clue. Due to the trend in past two decades of "de-emphasizing" the sidemen, there's not a single band, not a single one, that I can think of...that I know all the player's names.

Ditto on Bill Anderson's Po Folks
I suppose Connie Smith's band is real good now with Johnny Cox

Of course I'm a bit biased but But Faron Young had some good bands over the years. When I arrived in Nashville Ben Keith was the steel player with the Deputies. When I joined the band Skip Jackson was playing for him. In the years that followed we had Al Lewis from the Virginia Beach area, Cal Sharp from Indiana, and at the end the great Stu Basore. Hank Corwin was with the band for a few months, and George Edwards aand Lynn Owsley filled in a couple of times.I know I've missed a few players but I'm old!!!!!
