From publishers to radio to labels, consolidation has touched almost every segment of the music industry. Songplugger Sherril Blackman, always with his ear to the street, has tipped Music Row Magazine that many artists could be seeking their own competitive advantage. A sampling:
Danni Leigh + The Kinleys = The Kinleighs
Travis Tritt + Randy Travis = Randy Travis Tritt
Garth Brooks and Dunn
Joe Diffie and the Dixie Chicks = The Diffie Chicks
John Michael Montgomery Gentry
Hank Wiliiams Jr. Brown
Clint Blackhawk
SheDaisy + Brad Paisley = ShePaisley
Kenny Chesney + Mark Chestnut = Kenny Chestnutt
Neil Diamond Rio
Clay Davidson + Jars of Clay = Jars of Clay Davidson
Deana Carter + Martina McBride + Jo Dee Messina = Deana Martina Messina
Biggest proposed merger:
Mac McAnnaly + Shane McAnally + Lila McCann + Del McCoury + Mindy McCready + Ronnie McDowell + Reba McEntire + Tim McGraw = The McSingers
(from Music Row Magazine--probably belongs on the humour page, but I figured this page could use a little)

If Wanda Jackson had married Harold Hughes, then married Henry Kissinger, she'd be Wanda Hughes Kissinger now.

Ok, ok... I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit worried about what this thread has led me to start thinking about.
If we look at the bigger picture for instance, we could begin to do things like fuse artistic styles. For example, we could have a trio with two VERY different types of singers but with a great steel player (Darryl Singletary Bethel Merman)or - with apologies to Russ Hicks - even fuse country rock and contemporary country with an artform as obscure as the 60s musings of Richard Brautigan (Barefoot Jerry Kilgore Trout).
Of course all that's small potatos (or is it potatoes???)in the modern world of AOL/Time-Warner mergers in which one company can own every available type of media under the same corporate roof. As an antidote, I suggest we think about a merger that will forever bind country music with both classic cinema and great modern writers. To that end, I propose a merger known as Gary Allan Jacksonny James Dean Dillon Thomas Pynchon.
Heresy though it may be, however, I've actually mostly found myself wondering if the world is yet ready for, er,um, RuPaul Overstreet...

Well, another day - another merger... Since history has given us a number of steel players who are equally capable of playing country and jazz, perhaps we could use one (Vance Terry) to help create yet another trio. This time it could be with a female country singer, Vance on steel and a jazz horn player. They would (of course) be Vance Terry Clark Terry.

70s rock and country meet the 90s with the dubious merging of Southside Johnny LeeAnn Rimes. (Or, of course, Southside Johhny Leanne WomacAnally McBeal - but you knew that already.)
I really did promise myself that I'd make through one full day without stumblimg onto another one of these but, obviously, I've failed that particular challenge so far... |
