I would have to disagree with the Garth choice...
Williams, Tubb, Haggard... would have to be the top three condenders...
then there would be Thompson, Price and Jones
tell you the truth.. thinking back, I can't recall the melody of even one of Garth's songs... |

Due to his songwriting ability and all the musicians and singers he has influenced, even in genres other than country, I also believe the choice should have been Hank Williams Sr.
So Garth sold a gazillion copies of his music. Big Deal. On artistic merit Williams outshines Garth. People will always be recording Hanks music. You can't say that about Brooks/Gaines.

Female Artist? Cline, Loretta Lynn, my favorite Heather Myles.
I cast my votes based on talent and integrity .
Screw sales. All their money doesn't help my ears hear anything worth while. Just because they're wearing a big, smelly hat doesn't make them country anymore than a flying "v" could make HAG rock.

It should have been Merle Haggard. He's one of the truly great vocalists of all time, he picks a mean guitar, he plays the fiddle (maybe I should have left that out), and last but not least he's one of the best song writers who ever lived. I've worked in a lot of bands in my time and a lot of them never did a Hank Williams tune but I don't think I've ever worked in a group who didn't do Silver Wings, Workin' Man Blues, or Today I started Loving You Again. Haggard is taught in colleges now as a great American poet. I think for female, I'd have to go with miss Loretta Lynn. She's also a great songwriter and opened up a lot of topics which hadn't been covered in country music yet. This was probably voted on by people who didn't know a d@mn thing about Country Music!

A singer in the 60's who never got enough credit, IMHO, is Connie Smith. Another singer who is often overlooked by the public, not by his peers, is Gene Watson.
However, I gree with the votes for Merle, Jones, Wills, Cline and Lynn. (Tammy oughta fit in there somewhere, ya think?)

| Any body remember Charlie Harrisfine lead man and front man if I remember righthe was with the Ray price band I think or Don Rich another fine lead player fiddler song writed singer or Faron Young seems like I remember gearing something he put out some time ago. But any one of them 3 could have blown Barf out of the water. And there were many more that aint around no more that had what it took |

Besides the influence of his incredibly prolific performing career, Merle introduced many of my generation to the music of Bob Wills.
The main reason I put him ahead of Hank is that he stayed around longer. Both are genuine icons, but Merle's overall influence is greater in my opinion.
Garth Brooks? The notion is laughable. His "artistry" has had no impact on the fabric of Country Music that I can detect. He avoids making any real statement, musical, social or political, because you don't sell more records by taking sides. |

on Jimmie Rodgers and Hank/Lefty. What realy impressed me though was his respect to Emmit

There can be no other choice than Merle Haggard,Heck I use to do 4 sets of Hag songs and still not touch all the bases.Try doing four sets of the soon to be retired (My ars) Brooks.
