BLUES - SLIDE - FINGERSTYLE - OPEN TUNINGS - RHYTHMIC SENSIBILITY
February hosted a great weekend of workshops, and we're ready for summertime
and another weekend of learning, jamming, and making friends!
Spend an unforgettable day at Bob's house, nestled in the lush Santa Cruz
Mountains. The workshop will consist of two 2-hour intensive learning
courses, followed by a "conscious" jam & question/answer session. We'll
break to enjoy a gourmet lunch, plus snacks and refreshments in the
afternoon. *SUMMERTIME BONUS*: Thanks to the long summer days (8 pm
sunset!) and warm sun, we'll hold classes outdoors in the shade and add a
BBQ in the evening - including swimming, jamming, and more time to play!
This is a rare opportunity to study and play with Bob, whose world travels
have enabled him to bring fresh perspectives to guitar playing and blues.
Bob will explain how to use the sounds and ideas of traditional blues as a
jumping-off point to expand your own abilities to play, arrange, and compose
your music.
West Coast acoustic guitarists have so thoroughly enjoyed Bob's sessions,
that we've decided to offer this opportunity to study with him in a
beautiful, relaxed setting. It's not necessary to be an "advanced"
guitarist to benefit from this workshop. If you can keep time and change
chords in time, you'll find lots of quickly-accessible ideas which will
inform and inspire your playing. Bob's weekend seminars are open to new
attendees, past attendees, people who enjoyed the week-long session at
International Guitar Seminars last August...or those who will be attending
IGS this summer!
You'll meet other musicians from the Bay Area and beyond, to jam with in the
future. And, you'll learn some basics about jamming that will enable you to
communicate with other musicians, so as to get the most from this
pleasurable and social activity...or as Bob says, "the most fun you can have
without being arrested!"
SATURDAY, JUNE 3RD: HERE ARE SOME OF THE IDEAS WE WILL DRAW FROM:
DECONSTRUCTING THE MYSTERIES OF THE DARKEST SOUNDS IN DELTA BLUES: through
the use of tunings and muscular ideas, we will learn how that special
"heavy" feeling of the blues is generated through tone production in both
hands. We will cover many strong foundations of non-European rhythms so
important to the fundamental grooves of all blues music. Using the families
of tunings around Open G, Open C, and Open D, Bob will expose the hidden
structure which underlies all open tunings, thus enriching your own
composing and improvising. We will explore these harmonic ideas in
conjunction with rhythmic ideas to get that unique 'bluesy' quality of
RELAXED INTENSITY into your playing! We will use the oldest "pre-blues"
SLIDE melodies as a jumping off point, with a focus on Charley Patton's
simplest yet most compelling songs. Bring a bottleneck! We will all be
playing all the time in class, and the music is going to be great for
practicing/jamming in duos, trios, quartets, and more!
RHYTHMIC IDEAS: between your two hands, your two feet, and your guitar,
you've got enough rhythm to be the whole band! Using blues in standard and
open G tunings, and the styles of Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Bukka
White, we'll travel right up to the edge of swing guitar rhythm. We will
cover classic riffs and ideas in the standard keys of E, A, C, and dropped
D. Emphasis will be placed on PLAYING and getting your groove in a solid,
relaxed feeling. A full menu of percussive techniques will be on the table.
Hidden conceptual tricks of Robert Johnson's standard-tuning playing will be
revealed. We will learn the thinking behind what makes a great solos,
breaks, and riffs. You will come away from this class with a HUGE toolbox of
fresh new composing/improvising/jamming ideas. My classes are carefully
designed to accommodate the needs of players at various skill levels.
