I have a number of tunings on my web site that might be useful. Freddie Roulette uses this tuning on his eight string National:
G A A C# E A C# E
(string gauges .034, .052, .052, .038, .034, .020, .016, .012)

How about major pentatonic. In C it would go (bottom to top):
C, D, E, G, A, C |

I like E13: D E G# B C# E. You get that "Purple Hayes" chord on strings 6, 4 and 2, six frets away from the key you're in:
E7#9
E ___________
C# ___6_______
B ___________
G# ___6_______
E ___________
D ___6_______ The close tuning makes it easier to play fast licks. Try playing over an E chord at the third fret.

Oh, for a D-8! Well, like I said a 13th works well. Here's what I'm currently using:
D13 A6
E E
F# C#
D A
B F#
A E
F# C#
D A
C E The grips on the middle six strings are the same, but the A tuning is a fourth lower than the D tuning. I usually use the D tuning for lead and the A tuning for rhythm. I retune the low string of the A tuning to F# for songs in minor keys.
Notice that the first string of the D13 is a step lower than the second string. This is real handy for fast leads.
