Taking pickup covers off...

I'm finding that I like the tone of my laps by putting the heel of my hand over the pickup, just like playing pedal (at least that's how I play). To do this and still be able to block properly, I've taken the pickup covers off my laps -- where applicable. The poles and gummy part of my pickups are now exposed -- is this a bad, bad thing?

Nah, I've seen LOTS of PAF equipped Gibsons w/ covers removed...just make sure you don't LOSE the cover in case you or someone else needs them later, altho I guess your not using Horseshoe pickups!!!

I always liked the sound of the pickups with the cover removed. (metal covers removed) Most manufacturer now offer both styles.

You have to becarfull on some pickups when removing the covers. NOt all of them have been either soaked in wax or have a cloth type tape rapped around the bobbins. The wire as you know is very fine (like hair, not mine of course) On the old tele pickups the neck unit was completly cover'd. When you would take the cover off it would expose the individual pole pieces.

No harm, becareful with your picks not to damage the coils.
