That was orignally an SG Standard. (Trapezoid inlays, and what a friend of mine calls the "Voodoo" inlay on the headstock)
Quite a history. If it hadn't been routed for a middle pickup, I'd be interested. I'm looking for an SG standard of that vintage, perferably one that's been stripped of it's hardware and electronics.
I hope you get a good responce and you have your new PSG soon! |

Thanks for the note, Paul, I have done some research but have never been completely certain what model it was originally. I figured somebody could tell me eventually and now you have.
I imagine some player will be very happy to get their hands on it, it's a real honey and I haven't played it much for a couple of years - it's gettin' harder and harder to get me out from behind the steel. |

Wow, I never realized the high percentage of scammers chasing guitars on eBay! I have been buying and selling pro audio and model railroad stuff for quite a while now but I've never seen anything like this!
So far in this auction all but one of the bidders has zero or below 75% feedback, not to mention there was one guy who wanted to stop the auction and come over to my house and another guy who was "from US, I want you send Indonesia via DHL..."
Is this the norm nowadays or am I just lucky?

If I'm wrong someone will surely say it, but I believe the first year with pointed cutaways had Les Paul in gold script on the Headstock, they removed it because he was splitting up with Mary Ford and didn't want more royalty squables. The inlay definetly says SG Standard because a 3 pickup custom would have block inlays. The defining trait of these guitars for the first three years was a wide kinda thin neck, very comfortable, after that they began to narrow them, uuugh. Too bad about serial number. Good luck with sale.

Thanks for the news Crowbear, I was wondering if I had missed something in the newsletter...Donald, I have been informed since writing the auction listing that the trapezoidal fretboard inlays and the "voodoo" headstock inlay identify this as a Les Paul Standard, originally with two pickups. It's got that wide, thin neck that you mention, Gibson's best IMHO, and the third pickup with its phase-reversing switch makes for some very squeaky sounds.
A fine new home it will have, to be sure, I am getting more and more inclined to stay behind the steel and let somebody else show off on the six-string.
You know the guitar players' handshake: "Hi, I'm better than you!" |
