OOPS. No wonder the second part is causing trouble on E9. I have a slight idea of how to play it on E9, but I am not sure if it can be played fast enough.
BTW, what other CDs feature that particular style of playing. IMO it sounds so much better than bursting out 16th single note runs or faster.

Any Curly Chalker album/CD. He does lots of C6 chord lines and might well be considered the best there is in playing that kind of style.

Sweet! This is one of my favourite Paul Franklin rides (right up there with Walk of Life). I can't wait to learn this.
I remember seeing the video for this song about 10 years ago too, and when Paul goes into the solo on the C6 neck, the camera flips upside down. Does anyone have a link to this video? Jeff Foxworthy hijinks galore.

The 2nd solo was definitely C6, A buddy use to have the PF talk through tape. I tried it years ago when I first started on steel but couldn't hang. I might have to borrow it and try it again now that my playing has progressed.

Both solos on the Alan Jackson tune were played by Paul Franklin. The first was E9 and the second C6.

The reference to John Hughey on the thread you quoted was an error that was corrected later in the thread.

It's much more Paul's style than John's.

IT WAS PAUL FRANKLIN

Paul would not release an instructional tape teaching you how to play a John Hughey solo.

Case closed in my book -- plus I'm almost certain Paul has mentioned this himself on the Forum. I'm not inclined to do the search but encourage you to if you wish.

Tim,

I played both solo's. The first was on E9th and the second on C6th. All of this inquiries has brought back this session memory.

I remember Keith asking me to play the second solo like an old fashioned swing player would. When you listen to the second solo, I was actually borrowing voicings found in Noel Boggs style (whom I feel defined the western swing chordal thing) and fused them together with a syncopated rhythmic concept of melodic phrasing, very much like a big band horn section.

I'm flattered you all remember this record.
The C6th is my favorite tuning.

I've been working on the sweet picking part of the E9 solo (thankyou, Bengt!), where the technique involves sweeping the thumb backwards while pulling the bar back to mute the strings.
