Hi Ricky

I tried it last evening and it sounds just fine.

Tell me - the first lick that you play in the verse - across the two measures of the 1 chord, it sounds like you are playing the 4th and 2nd string together with the 2nd string raised a half tone - is this correct?.

Any chance of tabbing out that lick?

It's once in a blue moon that a song comes along and grabs me like this one did; it seems like everyone clicked on this one. I can try to copy Ricky but like the other greats it's really hard for me to reach that level of skill. I guess that's what intrigues me about the psg; to me it's an enigma and I love it.

Thanks Ricky - that lick works just fine.

Now about the one at 1'54", that sounds to me like you are using the half tone raise on the 2nd string with the 4th string at the 7th fret and then releasing the raise, lowering the 4th string and sliding to the 5th fret.

Am I correct?

So that's hittin' the C pedal then lowering the knee lever while C pedal engaged; then let off both then lower by it's self..all while 1st string rings out.

The first time I heard that lick was years ago on a Don Williams song 'Falling in love again'.(Lloyd Green, of course)
I determined to find that lick, and surprised myself by falling on it quite quickly. I wish I could find other licks as quickly, sometimes I'm hacking away for ever and getting nowhere!

Ricky, it's the C pedal raise, picking 4 and 1, then releasing C pedal and engaging E lever to lower the 4th, whilst letting 1 ring on. If you have the Don Williams song, Lloyd does it repeatedly through the the chorus, starting at 43 seconds.
Incidentally, this lick fits perfectly at the beginning of the 'Look at us' solo. Do a search for '2nd string 1/2 tone lower E9', 28 march 04, Pedal Steel section. I've written down my method of playing this part of the solo on that thread.

Ok Richard; that lick.
Well remember Lloyd doesn't lower his 4th string a half tone...so he must of done it similar in another way that your hearing; as compared to my tab. Also I lower the 4th string in 3 half tones from the whole tone raised position and that's not like the intro to "Look at us" as John raised the 4th string in unison with the 1st string; and then released the 4th string from the whole tone then lowered it.
But yes they are all very similar; but certainly different in phrasing.
Another way I like to use it is with adding the 2nd string as the 3rd tone and make the move a three note grip and pedal into the 4th string before hitting the knee lever while raised. In the Key of E.

Yes, you're right, Lloyd doesn't lower his 4th. I had forgotten that. He probably used bar slants. I can't slant the bar to save my life !!

I've only heard the four Linda Lay songs that can be downloaded from Ricky's site , Clive. If I have heard something that Ricky has played that I like, I usually work it out for myself how to play it. My copedant may be different than Ricky's, so therefore my method of playing a lick may be different to the way Ricky plays that lick. I always come at it from this angle: The guy on the recording is going to find the easiest way to play a certain lick. Why would he make it difficult for himself? I also look for the easiest way, that's why the way I play 'Look at us' etc may differ from the norm. I haven't got the discipline or the patience to follow tab anyway, I prefer going my own route.
Maybe that's why I don't get any gigs....

Richard I'm a firm believer in what you just wrote of how you go about playing the Steel Guitar. I think it so important to be able to hear something you like and work it out to where it plays easiest for yourself and the way you look and hear your guitar. That right there, what you said; teaches you to hear your instrument and hear YOURSELF playing it.
