Try
(E6 D6) Eb6 (E6 D6) Eb6

I haven't heard Hal's version but I believe that's what Buddy Emmons used on his version but I can't seem to find it either. I used to play the song years ago.

It lays well on both E9 and C6. In some ways I prefer E9 but either works fine. Start pedals down on fret 6 for the Eb6 (let off B pedal for EbMa7), then add the Eb lever for the F9. You can use the 9th string with the A+B pedals on 5th and 6th strings for the Fm7 and let off the pedals for the Bb7. A lot of it can be played at that one fret (6th) in E9. C6 works fine too but you'll move your bar more.

Good luck
