I have a student model GFI with E9 tuning. I have three pedals and a lkl and a lkr knee levers. When I read tab that indicates a movement on the 4th or 8th strings, for example 5L, I know that it is the fifth fret, but does the "L" mean raise or lower the tone? I assume it means LkL. Thanks in advance.

There is no standard for what LKL or LKR, etc. will do. Therefore, when you see:

1------------------
2------------------
3------------------
4-----5L-----5R----
5------------------
6------------------
7------------------
8------------------
9------------------
10-----------------

it means lower the 4th string in the 5th fret, then raise the 4th string in the 5th fret.
