Y'all pointed me towards Speedy West and "Stratosphere Boogie" about 4 weeks ago. Perhaps I can return the favor as I've just picked up:
"Swingin On The Strings, The Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant Collection Vol 2".
This is on Razor & Tie again. 20 tunes and if anything, it's hotter then the "Stratosphere Boogie" CD.
Thanks to all who opened my eyes. This is amazing stuff.

So there's no doubling up on tracks?.
Actually let me rephrase that, the songs that appear on the box set, do any of them appear on either the 'Stratosphere Boogie' or 'Swingin On The Strings' compilations?.
I have some pretty worn out tapes and would like to replace them, but I don't want to double up on too much material.

According to the Razor and Tie web page, four of the songs are previously unissued in the US, and all of the songs are not present on the "Flaming Guitars" box set. I haven't yet bought the CD, but I'm going out today to get it. "Caffeine Patrol" was one of my favorites from the "Speedy" LP!

Hey Brad,
Very cool link, they did a great job on the sleeve notes on the Razor & Tie C.D's, I hear.
Some of the material Speedy and Jimmy cut was just so out there, what did they put in the water on Cliffie Stone's bandstand?.

I don't think it was water.
I read a description of their sound as "Airstream Trailer music", which seems appropriate. It's big, shiny, aerodynamic and meant for the road!

Steel Strike was one of the first I heard by Speedy West and I feel it is still one of the nicest tunes, not really fast, but nicely put together. Bustin' thro', was another, a little more up beat. It was slick how he'd jump between his main neck and then onto the C#min. with the chromatic strings on the bottom.. neck for that "WILD" signature screaming slide UP THE NECK. Truck Driver's Ride and Speeding West are a couple more. |
