Considering that the rebel site is gone..... Would anyone like to start a new one? As long as the cost doesn't get too large, I wouldn't mind hosting it. Maybe www.pedalsteeltab.com

I just don't have time to do a lot of work writing tabs and creating sound files. But, if you guys will send me whatever you have, I can create a tablature site.

Similar format to the Rebel site. I could add a search engine to make songs easier to find - or to pull up all the songs of a certain artist.

I just WILL NOT do it all myself though.

Let me know if you can contribute in any way.

Um, disregard that last transmission......

I didn't notice that the Rebel site is back up. However, the idea is "steel" interesting. How about a site with just audio clips? Any takers?

Perhaps I could arrange it so that the audio clips could be searched by singer and by steel player.

I guess if anyone thinks this idea is worthwile, just start sending me the .mp3 files and I'll start arranging them to be posted.

Nice of you to offer. I'd like to state a concern I have, in the interest of making your proposed site a sucess. I've already expressed this to many in off-line communications.

For me to be interested in contributing to a site like this, I would like to see a policy clearly stated on the site that it is PUBLIC DOMAIN.

Contributions take time. The site can thrive if many become involved, as "many hands make light work."

However when I contribute, I want to be contributing to the Steel-Playing Public, current and future players, not to anyone person's private stock.

What I'm saying is, if you decide in the future to close the site, it's contents get turned over to another volenteer who will keep it alive. The torch gets passed. My work does not become your property.

I hope you take this in the constructive way I intended it.

For anyone interested in copying this entire site easily, there is a program called HTTrack Web Site Copier (I think that's it) that will mirror the entire site to your hard drive with all the links intact.

Of course, if you're on a dial-up line, it could take all night and then some. And if you're on a fast connection, the load could put a big strain on the site.

I don't knwo what the allowed bandwidth is for this rebel site but if well all go copy the site, I'm sure it will be maxed. Not a good thing for the site owner.

I wouldn't have any problem with letting someone continue the site if I, for some reason, can't keep it up permanently.

The "Rebel and Ricky" site has Thousands of countless hours of work put into it, to be used and heard by steel players and music lovers all over the world. It's a free site and yes you can download what you want, as that is the intensions going into it. BUT; Graham Reid did all this work and it will NEVER be replaced. For someone to copy the whole site is fine.....but if it EVER got reposted online; that would be the MOST Dis-honorable thing I've ever seen; as I believe the "Rebel and Ricky Sound clip and Tab Site", is Graham Reid's Site and his decision to do with it what he wants.
Droopy(btw; forum rules states to use your real name); I understand your intensions of wanting to host a site like the "Rebel and Ricky" Site; but there is already one and it is/was online; and for you to suggest folks copying the site would be for what reason??? For you to start/host a sound clip site and or tab site...is for what reason???....Sure it's frustrating for the "Rebel and Ricky" site to not be there and your wanting to replace it or further it or whatever your enthusiasm was in posting this in the first place is sorta understandable; BUT it will never work and never fly simply becasue your NOT Graham Reid........and Graham holds the passion for these timeless clips of the past and present and the countless time and effort to display them.....is UNSURPASSED...and will never be replaced or Copied.
Graham Put the site back up....and then YOU go and slap him in the face by wanting to Replace/Copy or whatever your wanting to do; just took the wind right back out of his sails....
I too have put many many hours into writing tab for this site....and will never write tab for any other site>EVER....
...wanna know why???....Because of Graham Reid. He Showed the passion he has for these timeless clips to display for all steel players to hear.....and that passion was/is my enthusiasm to write all that tab to go along with the Clips; for all to see and learn from. Both Graham and I enjoy passing on the passion we have for this work; to all steel players and music lovers to enjoy.
The intensions of the "Rebel and Ricky" site were/are honorable.....and I would hope that can be respected.....if there is any Honor left in our society...>these great things will continue and flurish....>but if honor and respect are gone> "They WILL DIE".

This Thread has broke my heart.
As a beginner Graham's site helped me more than anything. Just six months ago I found the site and stayed up almost all night learning "Together Again." Since then I have learned so many useful phrases from the site...
Oh Well, a huge heartfelt thanks to Graham and Rickey and all others who made that site such a wonderful one.

Thanks Again!

I think you guyes have my intentions and interests all confused. Maybe I didn't state them clearly enough.

...I APOLOGIZE...

...if anything I said was taken in a negative way. I'll try to address each issue mentioned above.

First, my name.
It looks like I've been forgetting to check the Show Signature checkbox when I post. The other forums I'm on do this automatically and show my name and details. Check some of my other posts, I think you'll see my signature. I just forgot because I haven't been the The Steel Guitar Forum lately.

About putting in time on my own site writing my own tab......
I have. I have a bluegrass site up and running right now with a tablature section I've been working on for at least 6 years. Not as many tabs as the rebel site mind you, but ALL my own work. I know how much work it is to tab out all these songs. My site is at www.16tracks.com in case you want to verify this fact. That being said, I appreciate all the work you did (and hopefully will continue do) on the rebel site.

About copying the site....
I did not intend to suggest that anyone should use the Web Site Copying software to copy the rebel site and then repost it to the internet somewhere. What I meant was that you can copy the rebel site to your hard drive (which I did) so you can browse the files offline. So when you go to bed at night, if you start copying, then in the morning, it should be done (or close to it). The reason is, you will not have to download files anymore when you want to access them - including the large mp3 files - which are slow to download. It's not an issue for me because I'm on a T1 line but for folks on a dial-up, the wait can be unbearable.

Regarding copying the rebel site to the Internet...
As I said above, that's not my intention either. But I did mention that I would take over the responsibility of the web site now that Graham doesn't want it. I don't understand why you have a problem with that. You obviously intended to share you work with the other pedal steel players in the world. Also, I didn't intend to take credit for your work, I'd just like to see it stay alive and available. As great as the site is, I still think making it searchable by year, artist steel player and possibly other criterea would make it better. I could do that.

About the rebel site....
Thanks for having the rebel site up as long as you did. Even before I found HTTrack software, I was copying files from the site for practice and study - especially the tab. I've learned lots of cool licks and solos that would have taken me years to find without your work.

I hope you'll reconsider in leaving the rebel site up. Not for me the asshole (which I've never been called before here), but for the other players.

Thanks for looking, Gary Shepherd

Oh one other thing just occured to me....

Back when taking down the site was being discussed, I had mentioned then that I had a copy of it and that I would love to host the site.

I got more than a couple of emails asking me to send a copy on CD to other forum members. Out of respect for the author, I did not send any copies.

I'm not always an ass.

Gary I do understand your intensions now and your enthusiasm for this site as I have.
Thanks for your clearity and that was an honorable thing to do.
As far as hosting the site for Graham...>that would indeed be up to him.....but I would suspect>"His work; His doing".
Thank you for the kind words on the amount of work for the "Rebel and Ricky" efforts for these last several years...and on behalf of Everyone that has contributed to the Greatest archive of Steel guitar and Tab...designed by Graham Reid and tabbed by myself and Jeff Lampert and several others.
-------------------------------------
To Others:
I too would like to see the site stay up forever....but that is Graham's call because it is his work on formatting all the site. Yes I have a Ton of Tab on there that I spent countless hours on; but I did that Tab "FOR" Graham Reid and the "Rebel and Ricky" site, and would like to see it used in conjuction with that site for all steel players to reap the rewards that come with using the site in the first place.
Yes you can copy all the tab...and/or music....but that is how the site was originated and corrisponds with.
....anyone wanting to copy all my tab and distribute it in any other way other than personal use> can buy it from me for 5000.00 bucks.......>otherwise; only use it as it was intended...>is the honorable thing.
------------------------------
Gary your an OK guy in my book pal...and thanks for the update on your intensions.

Gary:
Apology accepted, now please accept mine for my earlier remarks. They were made in anger at seeing your earlier posts. Realy don't know why you would suggest a music clips only site when as Ricky says, it is/was already there.
My comment in reference wasn't about doing the tab but doing the clips. I put 7 new clips up last night which took me over 8 hours to do. That time includes recording the song from either record or cassette, cleaning it up for hiss, clicks, pop etc then making up the smaller version to put online. Now multiply that by all the clips on the site and you will readily see why I don't want to turn that over to anybody else and you will also see why my learning curve on this instrument has been so slow. Ive spent more time doing this site for others than I have in my own pursuit of learning to play pedal steel. I've resigned myself to being no more than a bedroom player, able to chord along with just about anything I can listen to but unable to do more than that. All because my interest in the website is greater. It costs me almost $100.00 a month for this site by the time my dial-up charges and charges for 75 meg of extra server space are considered. Never once have I complained about this or asked anybody for help in paying for the site, nor do I intend to. You want to make a donation to help me, make it to b0b for this Forum.
Hope this clears some things up from my perspective.

One other thing, I'll gladly accept steel tab submissions from you if you wish to make any.

...submissions........
I think most of the tab I've written is already on the Forum. You're welcome to repost it.

I have a recording studio here and, from a cd, it would take me just a few minutes to make a steel clip from a song. Feel free to send me tunes you want "clipped".

About your web hosting costs. There are A LOT of hosts now that will supply 500mb, 1 gb, or more of web spade with 10gb, 20gb or more monthly traffic for $5/month. You should do a search for web hosting. Sounds like you're getting robbed there.

I just got a deal for 500mb space and 6gb of data transfer per month for $1 for the next year. (I also have to pay $10 to register each domain name.) I can send you more info if you like.

Glad we're cool on the "Ricky & Rebel" deal now. Now we all want to know..... Will you be leaving it up?

Gary:
I'm talking about you taking a shot at tabbing out some of the clips on the site. Credit would of course be given to you.
I also could do clips in a few minutes if I were working from cd's, but unfortunately, most of these old classic clips are either on record or cassette. That means i have to record them onto my computer and then clean them up before making the file I use for upload. For this, I use Cooledit Pro.
I'm happy with the server I now use. It is my ISP provider and is right here in my hometown. Most of the ones you talk about are in the States and that would be moe trouble to me than it is worth, what with the exchange rate and all.

Ricky:
Thanks, little brother. A weekend with you, I'd probably be able to play a song!! Love ya back!

To All Forum Members:
Please, no more hate mail to Gary. Misunderstanding has been cleared up and there is no need for this type of thing.
Thank you.
