Mike, I have an arrangement for Billy in the Low Ground, note for note as played on the fiddle and as I pick on the banjo. I have some large projects ahead of me, so give me a week and I'll tab it out. I renamed this tune when I play it on the banjo, one called, William went to the High Ground at Mach 2.2.! Unfortunately, I can't play this tune as fast on steel as I can on the old five. Must be a mental block or I just plain can't cut it on steel. OH WELL!!

Gary,
Thank you for your reply.I play Billy in the low ground on acoustic 6 string in C. Also I forgot to mention the tuning I am asking the tab for would be E9th.I feel that playing fiddle tunes is a great way to practice blocking and learn different licks as opposed to the standard E9th sound.
Thanks again ,Mike |

Mike, I also play Billy.... in the key of C on banjo and steel. Seems to flow easier on the back neck and I do not use a cheater for the old five!

Mike,I forgot to mention that my version uses alot, maybe 60%, of open strings. Kinda forces you to use some sort of right hand blocking technique. The real challenge is 168 clicks per minute.

Band in a box has a Bluegrass software package that has all these tunes laid out for you in note and tab form.
The tab is done for fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar and you can slow them down to learn the songs.
I have the software and it is neat and the tunes are done in the style of some very good players.
Give them a call and check it out.

Part “A” is played 3 times. All 0-2. 0-1, 2-0 is hammer on or pull off.
And should be played at 168 clicks/Allegro!! String #1 is a D.This is only
the first half of the tune.

There is a 'crooked' version of Billy In the Lowground that's often played by West Virginia fiddlers. Any of you all hear it? |

I hope you can decipher through some posting error of which I tried to fix.
Steve, I never heard of the "crooked" version. If its anything like my posting boo boo it must be awesome ! I do know a great fiddle player in West Virginia, Jimmy Unger. His son, Jimmy Unger Jr., also another great. Ever hear of them?

I took some liberties to try to make this more user friendly, Mike. If it works (big if) maybe you want to delete yours to return the page format to a manageable size.

This is a subject I am really interested in.
Never did have the verse the way I liked it to "Cotton Eyed Joe". The version I would like to play is from Urban Cowboy movie. Bridge to "Cotton Eyed Joe" is no problem.
I have heard Julian Thorpe and Terry Wood play a good bluegrass tune called "Lost Indian". Does anyone have tab on Lost Indian?

I'll try to post Lost Indian ASA I can, Keith. There are also multiple versions of this tune - like many others - including Cotton Eyed Joe, which has another, distinctly different version than the more common one. |

Steve, I am aware that there is a different version of Cotton Eyed Joe. That is why I said the one played on the Movie Urban Cowboy. I have the actual music to both versions ,and still can't get the verse to sound like I want. Drives me crazy because I hear 6 string guitar players play it the Urban Cowboy way all the time. |

Here's something to consider. I recently joined an Irish band, with fiddle and accordian. The group's repertoire is Irish folks songs and fiddle instrumentals, called jigs. I get to take solos in the jigs and have chosen to play the melodies on several of them, same as the fiddle player. This is definitely a good exercise in trying to expand both technique and musical ideas since the jigs don't fit so perfectly in conventional E9. If you can find such an opportunity, I recommend it. Jigs tend to be either fast, half-time (2/4) numbers or waltzes. They are, to my ears, musically interesting, with a lot of emotion built into the composition, and are not just I,IV,V. There are often tricky twists, with lots of minors, and real quick changes, some times from note to note. If anyone is interested, I can post the name of the jigs we do. Jeff,
That would be real cool to see what arr. you have come up with. I play acoustic guitar also and have worked on a number of fiddle tunes w/ a group of folks I play with.
Adam Granger (Prairie home companion guitarist) has a great book of over 500 fiddle tunes he has compiled over the years. One question, Aren't most jigs in 6/8 or 9/8 timing where as reels are generally in 4/4 or 2/4? My guess is that you are counting 6/8 as: one triplet, two triplet, etc. Thanks, Mike[This message was edited by guitar543 on 24 April 2002 at 05:01 PM.] |

These are the jigs we do, with the times and keys
Argeers 2/2 D
Virgin Pullets 4/4 D
YSTWFFWL (The Doorknocker) 3/4 G
The Burning of the Piper's Hut 4/4 Bm
I'll Mend Your Pots and Kettles 4/4 G
The Stool of Repentance 6/8 A
Dunse Dings 4/4 A
Lord Inchiquin 3/4 D
Jenny Nettles 4/4 Am
The Mullin Dhu 4/4 C
We do others as well. Most of the 4/4's are done in cut time, to a "Truck Drivin' Man" type of tempo. There are very good sounding, well constructed, and challenging instrumentals. |

The common theme in jigs is this triplet thing, but it's not like a waltz at all. I can't describe it well, but a common picking pattern with jigs - say if you were playing a mandolin, tenor b@njo, or bazouki - is this:
DOWN-up, DOWN-DOWN-up, DOWN-DOWN-up, DOWN-DOWN-up (emphasis in caps). This might translate to THUMB-finger, T-T-f, T-T-f, etc. on steel.
Like I say, I can't explain it very well, but the rhythm of a jig is definately a 1-2, 1-1-2, 1-1-2, 1-1-2 kind of thing. Jigs survived only in the northern U.S. states (and Canada) after they were 'imported' from the Scotch-Irish tradition. Very few jigs made it into the southern fiddle tradition. |

Andy...if you haven't heard of Tabledit
yet, this is the TAB program of all TAB
programs. In my archives are well over 200
jigs/reels/hornpipes; and new ones are added all the time.
But you have to have TABLEDIT with it's associated '.tef' file formatt to view and
access any music.
You can download the demo version for free, but for $50 or so, the full version is the way to go.
