I'm reading the great book by Steve Fishell about Buddy Emmons and at the end of most of the chapters there are a few key songs he lists that pertain to what was discussed in the chapter. I thought it would be fun to make a Spotify playlist that has all of them in it.

If this link doesn't work you can just search "Buddy Emmons Fish List" and you'll find it.

I am fairly new to steel, so this is a really cool way to get a "Birds Eye" view of the history of steel from the 50s to now. Some of the jazz stuff was, as one person said somewhere, so ahead of its time we never will get back to it lol.

You get a real picture of Buddy's life and career, from touring with Little Jimmy Dickens to his time in California (his solo on Ray Charles' "Feel so Bad" is a highlight for me... so COOL to more modern stuff in Nashville... its pretty hard to wrap your head round it. I recommend setting it to random!

Mr. Ellman, Thank you very much. Steve's book is essential reading for any steel player at any stage of their development as a musician. "Buddy Emmons Steel Guitar Icon" is also relevant to all musicians, regardless of the style they're working in. These songs are the basic source material, and Steve illustrated Emmons's career with the songs he chose for his book. Needless to say, hearing the actual songs is invaluable.

Craig and Robert thanks for the comments!

I went for a long run today playing the list and it really was such a delight. It "chose" lots of the Jazz stuff. Interesting that Buddy was so unhappy w the Jazz album. I think it's great. Loved to hear "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" for the fist time (I rewound that one a couple times). The level of musicianship, not to mention the clarity of the recordings of some of those old tunes is amazing. You can hear Charlie Parker practically breathing in those "Jam Session" recordings (not buddy playing, but big influence so it was in the book).

A couple other things really have stuck out to me hearing some of these old tunes for the first time. Most of the pop stuff was like-- 2 minutes and 30 seconds-- I'm guessing so they could get two songs on a 45? But still- even Waylon's live album from 74 the songs all just stay short. I love that. it's like, if you can't get the hook and make your point in that amount of time you didn't have anything.

The way they'd pan stuff so dramatically. On my run this morning it was Buddy mostly in my left ear.

Anyhow It really is so fun to feel like you've hit this treasure trove for someone like me who has never heard most of this music.
