I bought such an instrument from Jack last summer, going to his shop a short morning's drive from NYC. He had already started making it when I got in touch, but it might as well be a custom-made instrument, so perfectly did it suit my aspirations: small body, clear lines, elegant lack of ornamentation, and a striking contrast between the dark walnut back and sides and the reddish cedar top -- a near match for my cedar-top 00 size guitar. It even fit perfectly in the padded (Taylor mini) gig bag I'd brought.
I left thrilled, and I've been enjoying the instrument ever since. I play it strung in a G9 tuning (D-G-B-D-G-A), which easily tunes up to a kind of E minor if the the D's are raise a full step, and I'm really impressed with the range, the depth, the evenness, and the sparkle of the sound. The short scale means it can take heavier strings (I am using .015-.059), which means that, while compact, it actually has a fuller sound than the standard-size Weissenborn (a Gold Tone) I played while on the hunt for an instrument.
I especially like that fact that, for the moment, this instrument is one of a kind: it isn't defined by a style of music it is "made for," but instead encourages me to explore and cross musical borders.
I later got a Fishman Neo D pickup, which pops right in when needed (but which is mainly kept in the case to use in a pinch).
So glad I got this handmade instrument from a real luthier instead of an import or a battered Oahu squareneck. I highly recommend . . . . |
