The "musically educated" member of the band has passed.

A solemn moment for me - the last of the original members of The Band. Their and his influence on me cannot possibly be over-estimated. I'm fairly confident that if I could have afforded a Hammond organ after hearing Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale and the Big Pink album, I would have never moved from keyboard to guitar. By the time I could afford one (I still have an A100), the die was pretty much cast in the guitar direction.

For me, Garth was the true musical center of The Band. Totally the end of yet another era. RIP Garth.

Sad news...the last man standing from The Band. A totally unique person...musically and in other ways.
In 1976 I was touring with Chris Hillman, and we opened for them for a few weeks...right up almost until The Last Waltz. They were the most unbelievable musical experience I'd had at that point. I watched them every night. Garth was up on a riser - center stage, where the drums would usually be - playing his Lowery (he wasn't a Hammond guy) with 4 (!) 122 Leslies stacked 2 on each side. As awesome as it could be.

Vaya con Dios, Garth. You were a one-off, and you will always be one.
