Topic: Jerry Garcia's copedant- was it Day? |

Does anybody know whether Jerry played Day or Emmons setup? I'm am thinking Day, because he used a lot of B&C, and he probably stomped the first 2 pedals and liked that sound. This is a TOTAL guess. I wonder if anybody knows for sure?

One thing we do know for sure: Jerry Garcia blazed a trail on psg in the rock and roll World immediately! He could make anything with strings sing big time.

It's uncanny how all of the photos I can find of Jerry playing pedal steel obscure vision of his left foot one way or another, but in most of them his left knee appears to be parked behind P2+3 and pointed straight ahead, and I suspect that is evidence of a Day setup. Yes he recorded a number of B+C riffs but I doubt that he used that as his "home" foot position. It would be good to get more authoritative input, the GD old-timers are fading fast but maybe Barry Sless would know.

I'm not suggesting that B&C was his home position- I am theorizing that when he first got the thing, and was beginning to learn it, he stomped the first 2 pedals and liked the 2m sound, and quickly found the 1 & 4 unison.
Yes, Barry Sless would know.

Having transcribed most everything he played on records (guitars and steel) notated and perform it live, based on how everything lays I can pretty safely say his pedals were set up Emmons. He just went to the C pedal as one of his signature newbie riffs, not because it was in the A position. 90 percent of his playing is A/B and knee lowering the Es.

Yeah, this album hit me hard way back when. Great example of the musicality of Jerry regardless of not being a traditional steel player. I saw NRPS at Capitol Theater Passaic NJ in 73 with Buddy. Ran home and got hold of an old Fender lap steel and my journey began. |
