How can I figure out if a bar is Chrome or stainless steel? Does the bar determine the type of strings I should use?

Some say that a stainless bar used on stainless wound strings causes some drag and noise. I found that to be true too, but quit using stainless wound decades ago.

Chrome plating is a "colder" colour than stainless steel; a sort of faint bluish feel as opposed to the stainless which looks warmer, more like silver or nickel. Put them beside each other, and you'll see the difference right away.
