Topic: Anyone use Ampeg Reverberocket reissue? |

I know one of the eternal questions on here is "What's the perfect double duty amp for guitar and pedal steel?" and considering tube amps, Twin Reverbs get a lot of love. I have a session 500 that I use for double duty right now, but dang is that thing heavy. Wonderful fat tone for steel. Still dialing in my 6-string tone on it, using pedals for country rock stuff with some dirt.
I've been researching for a smaller/more portable tube amp that would work well for taking to practices and lower volume gigs. I also don't mind a little saturation for pedal steel, it doesn't need to be crystal clean (I love Ben Keith's sounds). I am considering a deluxe reverb, as they seem to get close to Twin sound, with less weight and volume. Anyone here use Deluxe Reverbs for steel? How loud can you get?
There are Ampeg Reverberocket re-issues (mostly manufactured in the 90s and early 2000s) that do not nearly resemble their 12 watt, dark & tweedy sounding counterparts of the same name from the 60s. Instead, these are 50 watts, reportedly very clean pedal platforms with super lush onboard reverb. They come in 1x12 and 2x12. There is not a lot of info or videos about them online, let alone regarding PSG compatibility, but can be had for $300-500 if you search. I've dug around quite a bit, but haven't been able to test one yet. Seems like it could be a great little package for a pedal steel player on the go, with a solid amount of headroom. Does anyone have experience with these amps, either for 6-string or pedal steel?

We have multiple previous discussions on using the Fender Deluxe Reverb for pedal and lap steel, but I don't recall many discussions mentioning the Ampeg Reverbrocket reissue series.

I like ampegs I really do... However, they just don't sound right with a pedal steel.. I have tried, reverborockets, Gemini 1 and 2, and a big Gemeni 6 with a 15... They have a cool reverb, but again, its just "wrong" for pedal steel.. Back in the day they used oddball unobtainium output tubes, and just had a unique and kind of "different sound... There is a very good reason why even when they were new, you saw very few on pro backlines... They are cool , well made, but the sound just didn't fit right with country, blues, rock.. I can't explain why.. We ALL like them, have since we were kids, but NO ONE uses them except to fool around with in the music room or basement a couple times a year.. They were the coolest, best built, most liked, most ubiquitous amps that NO ONE USED!
The reissues sounded somewhat different, a little cleaner but were no where near as well built, and might be better than the originals for steel, but personally, I would spend my money on another brand... All you can do is try one out, see if its for you...

Get a R.I.Deluxe Reverb. I use mine with JBL speaker for 90% of live gigs,Custom Vibrasonic for "too loud" outside events.

I appreciate all the wisdom shared. Think I'll definitely pass on the Ampegs unless there's one local I can try out. I just had two double duty gigs this weekend and was pleasantly surprised with how my old Harmony Rocket was sounding through input 2 of my Session 500, even without tweaking the steel settings between songs.
My buddy has both a 70s SF Twin and a DRRI, so I am looking forward testing the two amps side by side with my pedal steel soon. Cheers!
