What is best volume pedal that's not pedal steel-specific?

I'm using an Ernie Ball VP Jr volume pedal. Seems ok for pedal steel. Looking to get something for my son to use. Wondering if anyone can recommend an affordably priced volume pedal (i.e. not a Goodrich, Hilton, Lehle, etc) that works well for pedal steel.

If I can't find any such thing, I'll probably just buy a StageOne pedal and give my son the Ernie Ball pedal.

I don't really understand what sets those high-end volume pedals apart from the run-of-the-mill guitar volume pedals. Is it a better sweep, do they not alter the tone...or something else?

You might try the Moyo pedal. Affordable, small, works great for pedal, lap, or guitar.

Another vote for the Moyo. Stage One is ok also.

Take a Goodrich pot pedal and play through it, (just the steel and amp) replace it with a Telonics without changing your amp. Then you will know. Get your wallet out.

The potentiometer is different for steel guitar volume pedals, closer to 500k, while guitar VPs are generally lower, around 250k. The Stage One VP sounds and feels as good as a Goodrich to me, and is gear activated which is a major plus.

I bought a Moyo pedal as a backup for my old Sho-Bud pedal. After a few years, I bought a second Moyo pedal, and sold the Sho-Bud. I use it for pedal steel, lap steel, guitar.....

I never heard of the Moyo pedal before, so thanks for bringing it to my attention. It looks so small, though! Isn't it easy to inadvertently bump it out of place under your steel?

I kind of like having my right foot sit a little higher atop the volume pedal. Seems to make it easier to use the right knee levers with my foot raised a little. The Moyo looks like it has a lower profile.

I need low profile pedals so that my knee fits under my steel. I have a Goodrich low-profile and the Moyo. I’m liking the Moyo because I can either put it under the ball of my foot, or centered under the arch of my foot. i’ve found the diminutive size a benefit not a hindrance.
But I do like the Goodrich also.

I made a little tin plate that anchors to the steel with velcro and the pedal attaches with velcro, to keep it from moving around.

I borrowed a Fractal EV-1 Expression/Volume Pedal ($119.00 new) a while ago and was quite impressed with it.
It's very rugged mechanically and uses a rack and pinion to actuate a pot. The pot is 500K audio taper. The pedal actuation effort/friction is adjustable. It also has an output wired for "expression" which uses a lower impedance pot I think.

Some regular guitar vp’s have the jacks in front instead of the side. You can’t set it as close to the pedal bar. This is perhaps more important on a S10 steel guitar.

I've always used a full size EB with a 480K pot in it

The strings I find are quite reliable, not that hard to change once you get used to it and last years

the only problem with the EB is that it is a guitar players' pedal with the pivot point set well forward (for standing) compared to a Goodrich or any pedal steel specific pedal

Problem for me is, I'm used to the EB and the Goodrich (I have one) feels funny under foot to me now
