i'm talking to a gentleman about a fatback emmons d10 4x8 in pretty dirty condition. he's not a player but has inherited it. i'd like to come up with a fair value on it. it needs a full disassembly and has some cosmetic flaws.

he also has a mid seventies s10 in similar condition, and i'd be curious to know how much people felt the fair value would be.

ps, i know the value is what someone will pay, i'm just curious about opinions.

A lot depends on what ""dirty condition"means.. Is it just years of dust, grease, smoke on good playing , operable guitars?, or 2 beat up dirty, banged up, and worn out guitars that are all messed up. Big difference.. If its a deep clean up, disassembly, lube, and many adjustments, I would think $2500 for the D10 and $1500 would be a reasonable price considering the many hours in cleanup work they need.. If they are worn out basket cases, needing a bunch of hard to find parts, I would say $1500 and $1000.. If they are simply dirty, but play well, are set up well, fairly ready to play and just need minor cleanup, and new strings, I would say $3000-3500and $2000-2500... It really depends on how much work and how many parts are needed, and the only way to find out is a careful close up inspection, and then a tune up and play... bob

thanks, bob.

this is in line with what i'm thinking. it's ahrd to know values these days because people seem to be asking all kinds of prices, but of course, who knows what they're actually getting.

here are some pics. to me, this guitar looks like it needs a disassembly and full clean and a few other little fixes (note the single keystone tuning peg).

i live in an area where there are no pedal steels within two days driving, and even then they are hard to find. this one is in canada at least, which keep the shipping rate reasonable and avoids taxes. unfortunately, seeing it in person is not possible.

i welcome opinions on its condition.

Doesn’t look all that bad really. I think Bob is about right on prices. I good tear down and cleanup would run about 600 to 800. I’m talking about cleaning every part and polishing. Looks like mica needs replaced in front apron. Is that a hole in it.?
I’ll give you $100 for those extra bell cranks, lol, looks like 7 or 8

That looks pretty decent, and if you want a PP, and can score it for 2500-3000 , you're in good shape... Might be a good player right from the get go.. I personally don't worry about dirty undersides like some guys... If it tunes up, stays in tune, pedal and lever changes are close, and there isn't a lot of noise and sloppiness, its probably ok.. When everything is way out of whack, nothing stays in tune, changes are all messed up, it means it was owned by a guy that knew nothing about it, or badly abused it, or most likely both... First thing I would do with that guitar, is tune it up, see what the levers and pedals are doing, and play it for a while.. Might be set up to play great just as it sits.. I would grab that guitar for $2500 in an instant- chipped apron, dirty smoke stained pull rods, oxidized necks and all. bob

If I were to rebuild, I’d take off end plates any way so why not just replace front apron mica. I’d just use black. May be hard to match that exact mica and two tone looks great anyway.
