Every month or so, I'll pull this video up and be brought to tears. Wallace is playing at a convention, though I don't recall the name or exact year. About a year ago, a copyright strike got it pulled from YouTube. I found some dead links to that video, but it redirects to a generic YouTube page with a message stating that the video was "removed due to a copyright claim by The Pedal Steel Hall of Fame, Inc."

I discovered that a gentleman Scott DeWitt was associated with the Pedal Steel Hall of Fame, so I sent an email inquiring about the possibility of him re-uploading this video. Unfortunately, I never received a response, but I'm sure he has a good reason for removing the video. Still it seems a terrible loss to strike this video from the online record. If anyone has more info on this beautiful performance and where I could hear it again, I'd be deeply grateful.

Unless you just recovered from a coma this has been heavily discussed on the forum long ago. DeWitt Scott passed away long ago and Michael Scott was involved in a cease order on all the videos from the ISGC and any involved with the Hall of Fame. You probably won't get a reply from Michael. Forum member Bill Ferguson posted those videos and was forced to turn over his personal video library and computer. Look for the details in some of his posts.

Not in coma, just a brand new member who was deeply moved by Herby’s performance. Unfortunately the forum’s search feature is broken in my browser for whatever reason.

I appreciate the info and context.

Adam, sorry to hear that. Herby was a friend and I visited with him at many shows and stayed at his cabin in Tennessee several times. There was a post on here that his daughter was still making Herby material available for sale. I believe she was on Facebook. I will try to locate it and post a link. I may have that song on one of his CDs. If so I will let you know. Here was the link talking about his courses and materials.

Herby was such a great player and gentleman! He was the first player I saw using a Mullen.

Herby sold me my 1st Mullen D10 8x4 back in 94. It was due to my admiration for his playing and sound. I will never come close to his incredible talent but we became friends and I attended as many steel shows as possible to see him perform.

Talked to Herbie many times back in the 80's and was always struck by how gentle he appeared. The first time I heard or was even aware of "Ten Thousand Years" was from Herbie playing it in a live recording since removed. BTW, thank you Larry for your kind words on my humble version of it.

I was always amazed by Herbie's speed aka FWD, yet as fast as he was, he also played some of the most beautiful ballads around.

Its a shame that so many of our greats are being taken off air, with this younger generation never being able to appreciate by watching the hundreds of hours of video we were all able to enjoy watching for so many years. History lost, Legacy ruined.

I loved to hear Herby Wallace play. And he was a first class man as well. As far as Michael Scott pulling his deed, he has hurt many steel players and especially the young ones who never got to see the older guys play. For that I certainly have no respect for him.

Unfortunately, Bill Ferguson’s YouTube channel was shut down by Michael Scott in the name of the Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame. It was a fantastic collection of live performances at the International Steel Guitar Convention held in St. Louis every Labor Day weekend. The videos were done with the full approval of DeWitt Scott (Scotty) and a copy of each video was given to Scotty at the end of the convention. Scotty had no problem with Bill posting these videos on YouTube. After Scotty’s death and in an effort to maintain an income from the Hall Of Fame, which by the way, is virtually nonexistent, Michael claimed copyright infringement and had the videos pulled and Bill’s YouTube channel removed. That collection represented more steel guitar artists and music than any other source and was a treasure for players of all ages and playing levels.

And represented and promoted by Bill for the LOVE of the instrument and the musicians who played it. History LOST, and a Legacy TAINTED in one fell swoop!!! SAD SAD SAD!!!

Like other artists in popular music (I won't name names but there are some big sellers who can't fathom or refuse to accept the way music consumption has changed) who abide by these sorts of strong arm tactics the legacy will be that these musicians output and visibility will die and never be passed on to the younger generation. It's a self defeating logic.

I could never understand Michael Scott's "copyright infringement" argument, because the copyrights to songs are owned by the publisher and/or the songwriter. This is certainly well known by Google, the owner of YouTube. The Scott family possibly has some contractual agreement over the presentation of videos recorded at ISGC, but I bet they have no ownership of the copyrights to that many songs.

I know that many, if not most, of the players at ISGC insisted that no one, with the exception of Scotty and Bill Ferguson recording from the sound board, be allowed to record any of the onstage shows in order to control bootlegging.

Herb, you are absolutely correct in that video recording was strictly forbidden except by Bill Ferguson’s crew located at the sound/video table. I was blessed to be a part of that crew for a long time, and to my knowledge there was never any issues between Bill and Scotty about posting those videos on YouTube. It was only after Scotty’s passing and the family loosing the income from the show that Michael, presumably in an effort to create an income from the virtually nonexistent HOF, that the copyright issue arose. We were of the same opinion as you as to who owns the copyright, but in an effort to cover their bases, the videos were pulled and Bill’s personal YouTube account was permanently removed.
