My client wanted to change to a humbucker in his Jackson Maverick. Unfortunately, the proprietary shape of that changer/pickup surround meant it could not take an off-the-shelf item. And getting one from Jackson was not an option.

I pulled the pickup, drafted precise dimensional specs and spoke with Scott Swartz at Steeltronics.

Can do!

We discussed what the owner was seeking -- darker, smoother highs....less ice-picky. And I wanted it to be a little slimmer -- the original pickup was already bottoming out in the cavity and the first thing I wanted to try before talking about new pickups was to lower the pickup a bit....but nope.

Scott determined that designing it to the inductance specs of a GeorgeL 10-1 was the direction to go, but with the shallower case of his new line (507's, substitutes for the too-tall 705's).

I installed it today. Perfect fit. And it sounds really good. I think the client will be very happy.
Unfortunately I can't really put it through any paces because the guitar is left-handed and I consider myself lucky if I can set it up properly with the legs in the right place. Forget about actually playing it. But I like what I hear.

Scott tells me that he is really happy with this pickup too and he is going to add it to his catalog.

Don't be fooled by the parallax. Strings 10 & 1 are picked up just fine.

Maybe I don't need to buy a new guitar to have a humbucker in it after all...

Are you selling these pickups?

I am mentoring the owner of the Jackson. He came by for it today and we had a long picking session. I couldn't be happier with how it sounds and neither could he. This will be a part of the puzzle for him to gain confidence with his sound and grow ears for digging deep for rich tone.

Ironically, the more confident and better he gets, the more likely he will be able to get richer tone from the original pickup, leaving the choice of SC or HB up to tone-color preference and sonic fine tuning (and hum cancelling).

This new pickup is a bit darker and friendlier to his ear which means that his practicing and progress will be more rewarding.

This is a big win. Great job, Scott.
