Richie’s forthcoming new album will be out soon and everyone is raving about how great he still sounds. It’s true…. the man can really sing! Made me want to review his career and hear his iconic voice over the years. Here’s some examples of “that voice”

Nice thread, THX ! nice tunes which reflect back. I could pick a whole bunch of other tunes LOL 
From the Springfield days I too found " Do I have to come right out and say it " a favorite, we even covered it in the group I was playing in at the time. Along with several others from that 1st LP. A few years later we covered "Settlin' Down" I can tell ya right now those Poco songs were not easy to cover . but they were easy to cover poorly.
I always thought that Richie found his VOICE around the time of the 2nd Poco LP , and when he got to the Good Feelin To Know LP he was killin' it. We saw him a few times at that point and the vocals were just really amazing. When Richie sang that HIGH Tenor line in Pauls song, Bad Weather, it was iconic. I remember at a theater in Port Chester NY, when he did that the whole audience went into applause ! Everyone knew...
I was pretty shocked that the SHF song Fallin' In Love never really made it to the radio, I'm sure they all were. The SHF LP cover is interesting, Richie is the only one smiling and he's the one that was going thru a serious home issue that had him totally preoccupied and consumed . Listening to him talk about it, geesh its amazing he was even able to sing at all. One thing rings true , SHF was about Richie, as good as Chris and JD are, but the timing was wrong, it wasn't meant to be. But SHF was really a "Richie" group. For me ,even to this day the songs I listen to are Richie's. Its like two different groups on the same LP.
The new LP, I find it VERY interesting that the CMT website is promoting the video's . The latest song, a cover of Alabama's "I'm In a Hurray and Don't know Why" is up there right now. Is it possible that Richie , at 78, will hit a grand slam home run with this LP and become a household name ? And millions will say " Who is this guy , where did he come from " ? I sure hope so.

His book is a great read, always such a nice guy and yes his voice only gets Better with age. I love the Buffalo Springfield song, "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing"

Picking a favorite Richie tune would be impossible for me. I have always thought he was every bit as talented as McCartney - singing, writing, playing, performing, and choosing to always surround himself with other monster talents that could play and sing his tunes the way they were meant.
Tony, your comment about the audience applauding him singing that line in Bad Weather gave me chills. Even his cameo appearances are spectacular.
Craig, “Nowadays” was my favorite song too, as kid growing up listening to my older brothers’ Springalo albums.
Speaking of cameos, I have an old record by a singer from Cleveland named Michael Stanley who did this song with Richie singing his trademark backup harmonies. Makes the chorus come alive.

Fred, Thats cool about Clancy, I left Cleveland in '65 andmy cousins back there were Michael Stanley Band fans, Ialways thought he was more of a hard rock guy,so I'd like to check out that song.
Richie is also a Ohio boy from Yellow Springs not far from the Buffalo Springfield Tractor/Steam roller company.

I’ve been listening to “In The Country” songs again. Comparing to the early days. The best qualities of his voice are still there. So expressive, and pitch perfect.
Good and well performed as the latest album is… In the world according to my rules, other artists would be singing Richie songs. Or trying to 😎 |

While driving back from NJ last Sunday evening, I was tuned into Dwight Yoakum's Bakersfield Beat program on Sirius/XM, and on came Chris Hillman's Burrito Stand show. This was a roughly one-hour interview with Richie. Described on Chris' website here - https://chrishillman.com/ - about half-way down the page.
Very interesting interview, going through a lot of history and a bunch of tunes. It's been replayed a few times, but it looks like there's another replay this Tuesday Sept 17 3pm EDT, noon PDT.
Richie was orignally from Yellow Springs, OH, where I went to Antioch College in the early 70s. Poco did a show there early on while I was there. but my intro was in Boston while still in high school - actually, earlier than that for Buffalo Springfield. I was at one of the Music Hall shows recorded for the Deliverin' album. Certainly one of my big influences back when. His high tenor is breathtaking. |

easily the most underrated talent of our generation. Yes, well known enough among musicians that were/are familiar with his particular genre' of music, but he should be more of a household name, like Stills/Neal Young/Henley/Jagger/MCartney/Lennon/Springsteen/whatever.... His voice just stood your hair up when he was young, and has aged better than 95% of other pro vocalists of his era that are still around and performing... He is one of the all time greats...
