I am working on soloing on the changes of "There Will Never Be Another You" and yesterday, my 13 year old piano playing son (playing now 4 years almost to the day)... walks in and says "I heard you playing, are you working on Donna Lee?".
Matter of fact, I was applying "Donna Lee"-clichés to the changes of TWNBAY, and so I told him.
He sits on the piano and says "believe me or not, but I listened to Country (I have NEVER heard him listen to Country... he listens to Dizzy, Miles, Bill...) and heard some play these things!" and I told him why that is and that most of the "A-Teamers" were avid Jazz Jammers and evidently snuck in some clichés from their Jams.
So, he plays an line and said... "I got that from... BUDDY EMMONS!" Whoa! . "Whaaaat? You listen to BE??"

I just put this up here because I thought maybe BE can reach down and read us every now and then, and if he can read this, it might make his day!

... J-D.

I say it humorously, but I mean it.

It had to make your day. I think it's great that a young man is listening to the masters.

I enjoyed your story. Sounds like he would really enjoy learning some C6.

He's got all C's imaginable on his instrument. He digs Bill Evans. I got him a Hammond B3-Clone with bass pedals and he's learning bass guitar on the side.

My "axe" is C6th exclusively... I must say, I prefer for him to continue on keys... it's an easier live and offers a wider horizon.

Yeah, I shared to story, not to brag but because I looked at him like a owl with a light beamed at when he dropped that BE line and comment.

Smile ... J-D
