Next build for a new friend down in Florida

Using the Weber stainless steel Pro chassis that they silk screened for the 5G9
Builds around ten years back. Still had a few in stock.

I ordered a correct 5G9 board, opting not use Webers boards and layouts
Major problem was the transformer cutout was too large for the correct 8160 transformer that was used in the original amp

Mercury Magnetics is building a correct fit transformer for this opening to the correct original specs

The Pro chassis has a spot for a standby switch. The 5G9 did not. I am adding the standby function to my build

Adding inrush current limiter to the 120 volt side. Also additional fusing for the 5VAC and 6.3 VAC

Also added bias control and a pigtail in to accommodate a standard computer style ac cord

Choke, output transformer and power transformer all will be Mercury Magnetics

The cabinet was ordered by the customer from Armadillo amps.

Will have a JBL-120F for the speaker

Got it all done today Amp is quiet as mouse at idle! Great tone and tremolo
Mercury transformers and choke are awesome!! Great folks to work with. They nailed it on the right power transformer to fit the Weber larger cutout in their 5G9 chassis

Ken that's a beauty. Clean wiring scheme and superior components. I bet she is a sweet sounding tone monster.

Having built over 100 tweed era and Blackface amps I can say this was a tough build. The Weber chassis was not like the original. It was a Pro chassis silkscreened for the Tremolux controls. The Weber circuit boards would have been totally different from an original 5G9. It would have a filter cap board mounted inside with the main board. I opted to have a correct board built. I then built a cap board from an old Twin Reverb cap board. Got a Bassman reissue cap can cover

I did add a bias control and a standby switch. The original Tremolux had neither
All the Mallory 150 caps were tested with scope to determine the foil end. Installing them with the foil end in the correct orientation keeps the amp much quieter

The power transformer worked great. I tweeked the bias circuit a bit and landed right on spec with B+ , bias voltage and idle current

Real pleased with how it turned out. But as I said a tough build. A lot of components in a very tight space. Luckily it came up with no errors. πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

My only encounter with an amp from Mr Fox was at the Dallas show one year in the MSA room. There was an number of good sounding amps but one stood out. It just had something special.. more dimensional and sparkly!
I asked the rep who was playing through it what kind of amp it was and he told me it was tweed twin made by Ken Fox... nice work Ken!

I remember that show. I walked onto that room and recall hearing I think four players. I was shocked to find one of my amps there
That was a fun day all around. Great music coming out of the MSA room for sure

Hope I can get to another show in Dallas. Always the best players and lot of old acquaintances
