I have an 8 string reso that has a 'clunky' low string.

Trying to explore why, I note that the bridge inserts overhang the spider channel on both ends by roughly 1/4".

I'm sure that the spider in this guitar is the same dimensions as a 6 string version.

Should this have been a wider 8 string spider?

Is there such a thing?

No. The spider is the same. The bridge inserts will be wider although the string spacing will be narrower than your typical 6 spring spacing.

Here's an experiment... slack the 7th string, move it over... put the 8th string in the 7th slot... see if anything changes. If you didn't bend the string before cutting it at the peg the winding can slip, causing tone problems.

Sometimes, it's the string. I had a clunk and .003 more fixed it.
