This is really a great guitar. Solid, stays in tune, set up Emmons-style. I'm passing it along only because I need to upgrade from this push/pull system to more easily experiment with an all-pull guitar.

I believe this guitar was worked on in San Diego before it got into my hands several years ago, and that the underside was upgraded from the traditional clark installation to something closer to an Emmons setup. Any info and input on that is welcome, as I don't know how the Clarks were originally made.

Comes with a very solid case, well-made but a few bangs in the tolex on the outside.

Asking $2800.

Will deliver within reasonable distance of New Orleans.

Any questions, just shoot. Thanks

Clark Steel Guitars were Great Steel Guitars.

Jim Clark the builder was a friend of mine. He built great Steels for our friends the late Sonny Curtis who worked for George Jones and Tammy Wynette for many years. He also built Clark Steels for my pal the late J.D. Walters who played many years for Country Singer Freddy Hart and the Legendary Hank Thompson.

Jim Clark was a lot like my friend Zane Beck. They were good men, honest and did exceptional work building Steel Guitars. His Steel Guitars were a lot like the older Sho-Buds. Great playing and sounding steels.

In fact, Jim Clark was going to build me a Clark Steel Guitar just a few years ago. We met at the Oklahoma Steel Guitar Show and decided on one of his instruments. Sadly, Jim passed away just a few days later.

I recommend the buyer seriously look at this Steel Guitar it will make you a fine musical instrument.

This guitar appears to be the same type of undercarriage as a ZB Custom. It IS an all-pull changer, not a push-pull.

If I had the money, I would buy this gorgeous guitar.

I played Clark steels from around 1972 until '92 or '93. I also bought my first steel from Jim, a Fender 400 that he had put a basic E9 tuning on. I only played it a few months until I bought an early Clark D10 with a pull/release changer. That steel was pretty limited so I only played it a year or two then bought an all pull model very similar to this one from Jim. The all pull models had a changer similar to a ZB. The guitar sounded and played great but it was very heavy so the older I got, I had to go to lighter weight gear. Jim Clark worked for American Airlines maintenance base in Tulsa for a long time as did my Dad, my father-in-law, my uncle and some cousins. Here is a picture taken a few years after I sold the Clark, the mini switches controlled a Maestro Phaser I used a lot. This steel was only 2 or 3 years old when I bought it, I paid $400 for it and had to borrow the money from the bank. It was the first bank loan I ever had, but I was only 19 or 20 years old. The body decal had been removed for some reason after I sold it, but the pedal bar decal was still there, also the fretboards had "Clark" on them.

I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro.

I had a Clark in the shop several months ago for service. It was the first Clark to come through the shop. I was very impressed with the performance after servicing, very much reminded me of my D11 ZB Custom, but a little easier to work on. I would not hesitate to recommend a clark just for the tone alone.

Thanks to all of you for your replies and reminiscences, which I'm just seeing now. I do feel it's a special guitar — not one of the "big name" makers, but with comparable quality. It is, to correct myself, an all-pull guitar, and it seems like the undercarriage was modified from whatever Clark's standard setup was — though this would've happened before I owned the guitar, so I can't say for sure.

The guitar looks to be just as it looked when it left Jim's shop. I bought the very first guitar Jim built in addition to 3 others he built for me. The guitar looks all original thus no modifications. They are next to a ZB, built like a tank and sound incredible.

this inspired me to look up what info I had from the guy who sold it to me in 2018, which goes as follows:

"I bought it about 5 years ago from a guitar maker who had bought it to study the works of the instrument. When I bought it and started taking lessons I learned that the pedal configuration was not standard Emmons so I sent it to Jim Palinscar who is the go-to guy for psg’s. He converted one of the C6 pedals to the E9 neck and made it right. (Although lots of psg players have custom copedants). The psg is the hot rod of musical instruments—lots of different modifications...

I had some literature on Clark psgs that I’ll look for, but you can probably find it on the web. Mr. Clark lived in Oklahoma and was an aircraft mechanic."

Bump to the top; still available. Will ship if needed, but prefer a handoff, even if it means a long drive...

Agreed! It's a great instrument. Tell all your friends...

I think there are comparatively fewer players in Louisiana / Gulf South, but since I drive fairly frequently into Texas and towards the Northeast, I would be happy to talk about a larger target zone for this beautiful guitar...
