If I run a 50w tube head into my teleonics openback cabinet, wondering if I could damage the speaker at high volume or if it's safe because the speaker is rated so many watts higher than the amp.

I'm not very fluent in this kind of stuff.

Thanks!

In a word, yes. When you use an open cabinet to produce very low frequencies at high volumes, there is nothing to prevent over-excursion of the speaker cone. (In layman’s terms, that means the cone is moving more than it was designed to move.) Even if the voice coil can easily handle all the power, there is still the potential for mechanical damage to the cone, the spider, the suspension ring, or the tinsel leads.

Don’t do it. Shocked
