Hey fellow professionals,
The metal tab on which the teardrop knee lever attaches has failed. The weld joint gave up from 51 years of raising E's...
Should i seek out a machinist/welder to refab/attach this piece? Alternatively, does anybody have a whole intact mechanism to part with, to keep it close to original and avoid that process?
I removed the knee lever to prevent more damage, here is a picture of the part:

Not totally sure what's broken. Is the bracket that is connected to the knee lever just slideing around on the shaft? Not a real ez fix. You will need to get that shaft off and have it re-welded. If you need to dismantle, take many pictures in advance so you can have them as reference for re-assembly. Make sure the welder just welds out side of that lever support bracket. RP

Yes, the left side of the second picture shows the damage. The piece has mostly snapped from the metal dowel. Im glad the fix you described was what I had in mind. Thankfully it looks to attach in a pretty simple way.
Also, if anybody knows what kind of metal it is, that would probably be useful info to pass along. |

Type of metal...I don't think it's anything special..just weldable steel.
One way to lesson the possibility of breaking it in the future might be to put the stop (the travel limiter) right next to the lever bracket. I'll try to find a picture to show better what I mean..Ron

| Any old school welder/machinist should be able to fix that right up. I wouldn't worry about "originality" - a new weld is better than an old one. |

| i had a backyard welder make me a bunch of those this past summer. very easy to make. |

Mine broke in the same place. I cleaned it up good and brazed it back on a couple years ago and have not had any problems.
