I'm looking to get my first pedal steel. I'm very experienced on 8 string lap steel, and wanting to explore the pedal steel.

BUT...

While one neck would be tuned to C6, the second neck wouldn't have a standard tuning (C6, E13, etc.) but instead I want to use my own unique tuning based on Leavitt tuning.

I'm assuming if I get a pedal steel, that I would be able to customize the setup regarding which strings the pedals and knee levers raise/lower. Is that correct?

Hi David,
You are basicly correct, as far as costomization, goes.

However, if your customizing would require more parts, parts may be few and far between if your brand of pedal steel is no longer made.

And there are limits to how far the string can be raised or lowered. Smaller strings are harder to raise or lower than larger ones. These are just cautionary thoughts, in case you hadn't considered them....

What would be your setup?
Luck on your endevor.......Pat

A Mullen d 10 would be very good for changing copedents they’re very easy to make a change .
An the Mullen company is building lots of steels.
So parts would be easy too source.

Bob Schaefer had MSA build him a custom 14 string pedal steel based on the Alkire tuning, so it can definitely be done. Might want to contact Fuzzy. Mitsuo Fujii apparently will build anything you want.

however, as a word to the wise, really think it through. You will kill any resell value, so make it your forever steel.

If you are planning on a special tuning, A non standard tuning. You will have to pick string sets carefully, Or order single strings and build your own sets of strings.
Good Luck in your journey.

Mr. King is a builder and innovator. His recommendation of getting a Mullen seems very well grounded. Being easy to work on would be essential as you design your own copedant, you will be in experimental mode and want to change and adapt things as you discover hidden drawbacks to your original ideas. Very exciting news to see this fresh approach.

The builders (like Mullen or Bill Rudolph) wiĺl steer you in the right direction if you share copedant ideas with them I would imagine.
