Dagnabitt! I miss playing swing, big band, light jazz, western swing etc. Everybody I know with whom I played this stuff has left this earth.
My friends Boogie on guitar and Russ on drums used to humor me and let me play with them. I wasn't, still am not, all the great at it but I just love to play those kinds of music.
I love to crank up the back neck and, as my old friend Audie used to say, just get nasty...well, as nasty as I can get...I bet you know what I mean.
I have great friends that will indulge sometimes, but that's not really their bailiwick and I think it's really an imposition, so I just don't ask. They're all from different eras of drive and push.
It's hard to describe the rhythms, timing etc. to someone who doesn't practice it or is not really interested in the music. The feel, the vibe. A drummer that isn't all crash and bang.
I'm just too tired anymore to go out searching for musicians who get it.
It has a certain je ne sais quoi that either one gets or they don't.
I'm relegated to playing along with Time Jumpers, Tommy Morrell, Asleep at the Wheel and some of my other swing and jazz cds to get my fix.
No point to the post. Just wanted to vent...perhaps some of you feel the same way too.
Merry Christmas all! 🎅 |

Jerry I feel the same. Our brand of music is harder to find and old friends have gone. I do much the same. Play to tracks or CDs of my favorites. It's about all there is locally. |

Jerry, I can agree more!
I used to have contact with the guys and gals who loved to play western swing, country and western music from the 1950 to the 1990s, as well as steel guitar instrumentals. All stuff you'd find at the steel shows.
But here in the Spokane Washington area, the musicians, all tend to play weird stuff that doesn't even make sense, and the song goes on for 10 minutes. Heavy drums and almost a chant when they sing. And it's alternative-new stuff.
I don't even go out anymore looking for bands to play with, really not worth it for me.
Plus, the musicians and singers are really not that good either-you used to have to be able to play and know your parts, today, its mostly jamming, noodling away on guitars with single string. |
