My tuning pegs are very loose and make tuning inaccurate and difficult. I imagine that I need to replace or repair my pegs. I was hoping for some advice on the best route forward. I have an Emmons P-10 (I think is what it's called Confused ) and this photo of the pegs shows they are "Grover Deluxe". When searching online I found the one in the link below. It looksthe same but I'm not sure. Since I have ~3 that were broken, I was hoping to not spend $120 on replacing unless it's the only way.

I replaced the original Kluson tuning pegs on my old push pull Emmons , with current production Kluson tuning pegs , and they worked out fine . This was 15 years ago . I wonder if those Grovers are original , or replacements for Klusons .

I want to replace all of the tuning pegs on my D10 P/P Emmons, I'm not sure where to get them. I need at least 10 for now for the E9th neck, ASAP. The ads I've seen usually don't have enough for even one neck.????

I just went through this same thing. I used these https://www.amazon.com/Gotoh-Vintage-Oval-Tuners-Nickel/dp/B00EB11O40?pd_rd_w=1hiB4&content-id=amzn1.sym.300a3262-566c-4179-a45e-2e093bbf316d&pf_rd_p=300a3262-566c-4179-a45e-2e093bbf316d&pf_rd_r=WAVEF1P8R1PQKCQZX6K0&pd_rd_wg=POKtO&pd_rd_r=ff093a0c-b116-43ab-884e-9543cb95827c&pd_rd_i=B00EB11O40&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_m_grid_dv_rp_0_2_i
They fit and work fine to replace Kluson tuners on a old Emmons.

I am replacing my vintage style klusons also. They re just not stable enough. I’m trying out a different style kluson that looks more like a Grover.
I’ll make a report once I use them for a while.
I can get the vintage style klusons in tune by dropping below the note and slowly pulling it up to pitch. Sometimes it takes a few attempts to get it right though. For some of the micro tonal work I get they don’t really work.

+1 on the Gotoh Kluson-style tuners. I have them on my S-10 P-P and they work well. I can't say how they compare to your Grovers, fit-wise, but you could look at the specs and compare measurements. Stew-Mac has the dimensional drawings on their website, if I remember correctly.

And welcome to the SGF. Always glad to have a new member chiming in.

Should any late 70’s PP owners need a few Kluscon ‘Keystone’ tuning pegs ( sometimes referred to as ‘ Tulip type’ tuning pegs), just send me an email.

Thanks
Ron

Wow thank you all for the input! I bought the guitar with the Grovers so I'm not sure if they're original. The Gotohs on amazon have a review that says they work well with someone's 70s Emmons steel guitar so I'll probably replace the real bad ones with one of those and report back. Thanks Mike for the suggestion!

I ended up buying the link I initially sent because they arrived much sooner than the Gotohs. From the amazon listing it looked like it was ~$50 for just one peg but it turned out to be $50 for the whole set so I don't feed bad about it at all!

I should have said 6 pegs instead of "whole set". It may also be worth noting that there is no hole in the tuning post, they are split-head pegs.

Hi Jonathan I had the Tulip Klusons on my Emmons. I used to take them off and squeeze the case that wrapped round the peg shaft. worked well for years until I was checking the guitar without legs leaned against the wall and kick the top off one of the pegs when the phone rang. Replace them all with the Button top Klusons from All Parts Dave Smile

If you have 3 tuners giving you problems. And the guitar has several years age on it. Best thing to do is replace all the tuners at once. Other tuners will go bad and be the same problem and hunt again.

No company that makes keys, I know of sells 10 keys in a set. Just buy 2 sets of 6 keys. Replace all of them at once, And you have a spare key for each side of the neck, To put in the your stash of parts.

Be sure to check new keys for shaft diameter through the key head. I replaced a set keys on a MSA Classic, I ordered 2-6 piece sets of Grover keys. The old keys had 3/8" shafts, The new ones had 10mm shafts. Had to remove sides of the key head and drill the holes larger.

Good Luck on this project, Happy Steelin.
