Just Bought a new Telonics Super Pro Volume Pedal. It cleaned my effects up. This is a great buy. $599.00 If you are tired of a Muddy sound go for it you can thank me later! Randy G.

Most of what players refer to as a muddy or damp sound comes more from the high-wound pickups than it does from a pot pedal. (Keep in mind that all Telecasters have a pot built in, and most aren't lacking in treble.) Of course there are those who will say that lead players play with the volume all the way up. But, the old timers here will remember back in the '60s when most all pedal steelers had a far brighter sound than you hear today. And guess what? The always maligned and infamous "pot pedal" was all they had. Here are some examples for the doubters...

"Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and you can get blazing treble using a pot pedal." Mr. Green

$600 for a volume pedal is definitely not a great buy. But if it does what you need it to do, it may have been an essential buy.

High-wound single coil and humbucker pickups can sound clear and bright as your amp will take them if you plug your guitar straight into the amp input. The question of how to get that sound through a low tech volume pedal is to place the pedal after the preamp in an effects loop. That’s what the Peavey Nashville amps are set up to do. They used to cost what, about $400?

The only drawback to the fx loop signal chain method is that it allows the full gain setting of the preamp into the sound no matter what level the volume pedal is. I happen to like that, but fans of the crystalline sparkly clean sound might not.

A Sarno Freeloader (or even a Black Box) is cheaper, and cleans up impedance issues just as well. I had a Goodrich optical pedal for a while, and it sounded about the same as the Freeloader into a pot pedal (right down to the tunable loading).

The Forum could sure use a Frequently Answered Questions section for each topic section. The “volume pedal tone suck” question would be near the top in number of hits.

Hi Randy I made my own volume pedal that I use on all of my posted songs. I use an emmons pedal with a small dual 100k pot and two Silonex opto isolators wired like a pot. No moving parts in the audio line. The pot has 5v across it to drive the LEDs in the isolators. Total cost £10 Dave 😊

The issue is tone suck, not who uses a pot pedal and doesn’t have a problem with tone suck.

If the volume pedal in your signal chain is the source of your trouble, there are remedies that work. It doesn’t have to mean buying a new $600 pedal, or a magic buffer box, or a new pickup, or reconfiguring your signal chain, or geeking out with a soldering iron and 10 bucks worth of electronic parts that half of us here can’t spell the names of. But any one of those solutions will probably work.

Give the guy a break. He fixed the problem and is happy with the solution. Way to go, mister.

A new set of cables in the circuit cured my problem. When I went to a Quilter Tone Block 202 my tone went south.
I had used a set of George L .145 cables for years, Nashville 400, 2 Evans Amps and rack box with Tubefex and power amp, No problems with tone.
I even reset the connectors on the small cables, No help.
I got a set of new .240 diameter cables, I had the tone I wanted. Cost me $30.00.

I got a D'Addario DIY Kit. Kit contains 40ft of .240 cable, 10 solderless plugs, Cutter and screwdriver in kit. I ordered 2 extra solderless plugs. With this I built 3 sets of cables, 3 cables about 3 foot 1 inch, 3 cables about 10 foot 1 inch long.
1 set at home, 1 set in seat, A local steeler has 3rd set trying them in his setup.
