I am trying to find a more desirable tone from my D10 Carter through a Peavey Session 400 Limited. Any suggestions for an EQ pedal?

| many eq pedals add a lot of noise, which is not ideal. most eq units are graphic eqs, which may or may not have the right frequencies chosen for steel. you need a high quality parametric eq. i’ve tried a few, and went with the empress park eq. it really does a great job cutting the mids in just the right place and just the right amount. i also use it for a bit of bass boost and to control the harshness of the treble. as a bonus, it has a great boost function as well. |

I agree completely with what Dave said. I also use the Empress ParaEQ.

I do not currently have an EQ pedal, but I did look into these a few months ago, and found that Empress was definitely top of the heap for the pedal format. I am gratified to see others recommending it.

| The Session 400 is one of the best sounding steel amps ever made and its tone controls are quite comprehensive. I suggest you practice with your amp turned off until your fingers learn pull tone from the strings alone. If you don't do that first you'll never get it from a box. |

| i kind of agree with what dave said above. i use my eq when i play with a fender twin, because its stock mid range control is not ideal for pedal steel. when a use my session 400 i find i don’t bother turning the eq pedal on. the session 400 has a sweepable mid control as well as treble and presence. it is voiced very well for pedal steel. |

| I will only add that ALL eq filters generate phase distortion, and especially so for inexpensive multi-band stomp-box circuits. If you look at your signal on a scope the fine clear trace becomes wobbly and blurry when even the very best eq is applied, thus adding more eq to a signal will always reduce the clarity and integrity of tone produced, which is why professionals use the least eq possible and then only to cut undesirable frequencies, as boosting the desired ones increases audible phase distortion in that part of the spectrum. |

Ah, yes, the old Session 400/LTD/Limited confusion. The 400 "Limited" is no doubt the most limited of the three, but even with the progression from discrete components to op-amps the eq filters themselves remain essentially the same, retaining the well-voiced lows and highs and sweepable mids of the original. If there's a problem with the tone coming out if the amp additional eq is not going to solve it. |

Peavey Session 400 Limited is a mediocre amp at best.
Test some other amps.
