I purchased a GFI SD10 a year ago and changed the pickup. I found the GFI used no springs or foam for height adjustment. The pickup mounted flat and secure to the wood deck.
I have a 1975 MSA D10 I keep set up because of the C6 neck and it has pickups mounted on foam and springs. I decided to fabricate hard maple plates to mount the pickups solid to the deck like the GFI and made the mounts so my string to pickup distance was fixed at the same close distance as the GFI.
After completing the solid mounts and playing I do notice a tonal difference. It is not a lot but it seems to have a little more presence.
Is it because of solid mounting the pickup to the deck I don't know, but I do hear a difference I like.
I am making no recommendations, I am just stating the personal results of my project. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |

Hi Bill you said you mounted the pickup at the same height as the GFI which suggests it was different than its position. If that is true it would definitely have a tonal difference. The magnets will affect the vibration of the string. |
