I believe Mike's song was "Dreams of India". "Song of India" was a Big Band standard.

One of my very favorite songs by Mike Smith. BTW I lost my phone and couldn't retrieve the numbers. When you get a chance give me a call.

The YouTube at the top of this thread is, indeed, Gary's amazing performance of "Song of India" and not Mike Smith's, "Dreams of India"

Although "Song of India" was a big band hit for Tommy Dorsey, in 1937, it wasn't composed by him, nor was it composed as a jazz standard. It was borrowed from Nicholai Rimsky-Korsokov's 1898 opera in seven scenes, "Sadko". "Sadko" was inspired by the bylina of "Sadko" (a bylina is type of Russian epic oral poem). Tommy Dorsey adapted the melody for his "Song of India" from the aria, "Song of the Indian Guest" which appears in Scene 4 of Sadko, "Pier in Novgorod".

Keep on picking'!

great stuff. steel players are probably more familiar with the version by Danny Gatton and Buddy Emmons, aka the Redneck Jazz Explosion!
