Son Volt dropped a new album which is a tribute to Doug Sahm
Brad Sarno plays steel on the album.
What is that effect on the steel about 1:50 into the song? Leslie?
The steel sounds like a heat ripple on a Texas highway!

Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Hopefully you’ll get an answer from Brad himself.
To me, it sounds like a stereo phaser with the direct sound on one side and a seriously deep dish phase on the other. It also seems to have a fizzle, like a deep scooped flanger, or a maybe chorus with tremolo. Outside possibility of auto-wah.
Whatever the effect is, it is also some fine playing and perfect for the song. I like your description “heat ripple on Texas highway”. |

Nice playing and love the reverb drenched vibe. Would like to hear Brad;s comments on the recording. _________________ I survived the sixties! |

Sounds like a phaser pedal to me, reminds me of my orange Ross or the MXR phase-95 on similar settings. Tasty playing! |
