Tom Brumley Copedent question

Did Tom Brumley have a 1 step lower on 7th string? I'm learning Rocks in My Head and I'm pretty sure I hear that on the second steel lick on the II-V progression. If so, I'm wondering what lever I might put that change on if I decide to...

There's a lick in there where I swear it's a drop on 7. I can do it with the bar, but then not pick up the rest of the lick in time or clean. Of course, I'm not Tom Brumley by any stretch

Tom did indeed have 2 separate changes on string 7. A knee lever that raised F# to G. his 1st pedal raised F# to G#.

Well, that may have been true on the ZB guitars he used. However, I just checked. again, and on the Anapeg guitars copedent, there are NO changes shown on string 7. I'm just reporting what I see.

Bill, If you are looking at the Anapeg that was Tom's that is for sale, that copedant has been changed from Tom's. It also has had 2 knees removed.

Hi Donny

I was thinking that he was sliding the bar back and finishing the first part of the lick on string 8, but then how does he complete the lick so smoothly as it goes up to the lowered 2 or raised 5? I'll have to transcribe it when I get home and put it up here.... I know, it's Tom Brumley, but I'm trying my best to capture that particular lick because it's cool and I can use it other places.

If it's the same lick you're asking about... it only uses strings 3-4-5. It starts in a pedals-down position, slides down a fret while adding the E-string lower, then one more:

Fret 8: stgs 3B-4

Fret 7: 3B-4L

Fret 6: 3B-4L,
then string 5 to 5A
3B-4L
3-4 (so this is where you're releasing AB pedals)

Fret 4: 3-4

Fret 1: 3B-4-5A

I'm talking about the lick over the 5 chord at 16 seconds in, at the end of "When I believed anything that you said" I've got to sit back down with the steel and transcribe it tonight and look at your thread and see if we're talking the same lick...

I don't have my steel with me, but I'm pretty sure the lick is made with the A pedal down, and hitting strings 1, 4, and 5, and then releasing the A for the last note.

It's a simple move, and doesn't involve any strings below the 5th. Tom's playing with Buck was very simple and basic, so don't go overthinking his setup. It can all be done with A, B, C, and the E r/l. Very Happy

It's actually a really cool F7 lick and I've been trying to find the best way on either fret 13 or fret 8 to play it. Both involve a quick octave leap from between Eb's followed by a slide to D at the top continuing down the scale to C, then finishing F G A at the end

Given the slides I hear, I'm convinced it's played like this:

C Bb A G^F Eb (+octave) Eb^D C F^A C

fret 8 AB
4 2(-1/2) 5
slide to fret 6 AB
5 5(-A) 6
back to fret 8 with B and RKR for 1st string Eb
-1 1 4 6 (slide to fret 10) 6 7

Brilliant Dale! Perfect. I was getting lost on the second half of the lick from the 6th fret. I was thinking that I had to go back to the 8th fret to finish... I have the copedent to play this exactly as you did. I knew there was a way that he kept this in 1 or 2 positions!

I'm so happy you did this. It'll open up a whole lot of the bakersfield book that I've been working on!
