An Ooollllddd Reba song brought back to life, more like to immortality. I'd pay good money just to watch him just play solo, stripped down to nothing but his voice and a gut string guitar. Outrageous singer, best I've heard in years and years. This stuff gets me so deep. Not knocking the band one bit but damnation what a voice.

I hate to admit that I don't really listen to any of the newer singers. But I'd have to say this guy's stronger than Tarzan's armpits!

Kenny, There are a ton of new guys and gals out there blowing down the doors.
I always check SavingCountrymusic.com for great reviews and a weekly playlist of folks you don' hear on the radio.
There are a ton of great young steel players out there also, we are in a good place these days, just a bit harder to find at first!

Way above the mainstream average! He has real vocal chops.
Nice guitar-part, too.
It's a pity he won't make it on to radio play lists (or maybe he has?).

He’s actually getting a ton of radio play, is winning a lot of awards, and is getting a lot of attention. Country music is slowly making its way back….

Then I'm happy to be corrected. It's been so long since I even tuned in a country station, I'd wrongly assumed things had sunk as low as they could with formulaic productions and thinly-disguised southern rock.
I long for the '90s/'00s when everything was top-notch. Even the less-capable singers (Tim McGraw comes to mind) turned out records with exquisite arrangements and stellar musicianship.
Keith Whitley, Daryle Singletary, Randy Travis & co were superb. This guy is a breath of fresh air.

| I first heard of him sing a song with Willy Nelson called “Sad Song and Waltzes Ain’t Selling This Year”. I didn’t know who was singing with Willy at first. I thought maybe Travis Tritt did something a long time ago I never heard of. It wasn’t till I googled Williy singing the song that I found out it was someone named Cody Johnson. He’s modern but atleast he keeps the historical tradition alive in everything he does. |

Powerful and expressive voice…and THAT guitar really makes it. Frankly I never cared much for the song (though it is very well crafted) until now.

Yeah, I got it. I guess I didn't wanna bury it in the Music section because he normally plays with steel players, this was a rare instance when he doesn't, and the topic was about the contrast. So I added some Steel Player content.
There are days when I think we can get a little hyper-steel focused and miss the bigger picture. Yes, I know this is the steel guitar forum. But sometimes the space where the steel guitar goes can be occasionally great without it. Sorta' like not playing over every hole.

Yeah, I sorta feel the same way. And I'm from Massachusetts. The original is very well done - good production, good everything. But somehow it didn't hit me the way this version does. |

| Just FYI, the only reason I started this thread in the "Steel Players" section is because as "Steel Players" I believed the players who are constantly complaining about the demise of traditional style country music might breath a sigh of relief with an artist like this one on the rise. If his style catches on it'll help put a lot of slowed down or out of work players back in the game. In other words as "Steel Players" Cody Johnson may not be a steel player but he may indirectly help you all get more work. I should've known better than to bother with this thread because ya can't please everyone, especially on the forum, always a bunch of Old Negative Nelly's around who live to criticize someone about something. |

Barry - No apologies. It got my attention! As I said earlier, I don't normally listen to the newer crap. He's my new favorite now. Heck, putting it here is better than seeing sports figures, rock, jazz, etc. folk's Obits on the Gone Home Forum.

| Not at all impressed. I listened with headphones on and I don't get the praise shown here. And the nylon string guitar is a joke. I happen to love this song in its original version and have recently worked on a all pedal steel version. I use the original backing tracks from a karaoke site. Cody can sing well but this version doesn't work for me. |

Just so you guys know, Harrison Yount is a really young pedal player and plays for Cody Johnson and has for the last six years. He is a really above good steeler. Plays barefooted and you won't meet a nicer, down to earth, young man than Harrison. I first met him at the Dallas steel show in 2019 or 18 and he was playing great then. I think he is in his mid-twenties. He is a forum member. Look him up and watch some of his u-tubes.
Cody Johnson was here in Colorado Springs to fairly large crowd. I would have liked to talk with Harrison but I am sure he was plenty busy. I did not go to the show.
Bottom line, there will never be another Ray Price, Faron Young, George Jones or Haggard and many others from the past singing Country Music the way it was meant to be.
Learn about Harrison Yount, you won't be disapointed. |
